Student Observation
Do you think the teacher you observed established and communicated learning goals, tracked
student progress throughout the lesson, and celebrated success? Explain.
-I think my teacher did the best she could for the allotted time she was given. She accessed prior
knowledge before the video and told them what they would be learning about. The teacher
explained to the students that they needed to pay close attention to the video because they were
going to take a quiz together afterwards. The quiz would be considered formative assessment
because she noticed who was raising their hands to the correct answer and who wasnt. She then
had them write in their science notebooks 3 things they learned today, which could be used as
data to figure out who understood the lesson and who did not. She celebrated their successes by
having them share with a partner what they wrote down and even let a few students share with
the class.
Do you think the teacher was effective at managing the classroom during science instruction?
Explain.
-My teacher is always effective at managing her classroom and today was no different. The kids
listened to her every instruction and spoke when they were allowed to. At one point the kids,
during the time they were allowed to speak their volume reached a level that the teacher did not
like and my teacher used one of her classroom management tools and told them to quiet down
and the students did.
Do you think the teacher effectively engaged the students? Explain.
-I think the teacher chose a video that effectively engaged the students. Throughout the video, the
kids were laughing and clearly learning because when they took the quiz at the end, majority of
the class were answering correctly.
Do you think the lesson you observed was an inquiry lesson? Explain.
-I do not know what I would classify this lesson as. When I hear inquiry, I imagine children figuring
out information for themselves and actually doing something other than writing.
What aspects of the lesson that you observed would you change? Keep? Explain.
-I would keep everything about my teachers lesson the same. With the limited amount time she
has for science, she has found a way to keep them engaged and learning even it is not indirect
instruction.
What I learned in order to teach my lesson is that this classroom operates under direct instruction
and that I need to modify my lesson to fit the way these students learn. I also realized that I should
try to keep my lesson simple because these students are used to doing activities outside of coloring
and worksheets.
