MATH 115B Spring 2017: Homework 1 (Recap + Sec 2.6)

This document provides the homework assignment for MATH 115B Spring 2017. It includes practice problems on vector spaces and bases as well as 3 mandatory problems. The mandatory problems ask students to prove statements about linear functionals and their kernels, linear maps between vector spaces, and the relationship between a linear map and its transpose. The document also suggests additional optional problems for students to consider.

Homework 1 (Recap + Sec 2.6)

Due April 14 2017 at 9:00 AM

(3 10 pts) Turn in solutions ONLY to the problems marked mandatory

Practice problems (computation and testing definitions)

Let V /F be a dimension 3 vector space and let B1 = {x, y, z} be an ordered

basis of V . Let B2 = {x + y, y + z, z + x}. Answer the following questions
based on this information.

1. Show that B2 is an ordered basis for V .

2. Find coordinates of the vector x + y + x with respect to B1 . Also find

its coordinates with respect to B2 .

3. Let T : V V map B1 to B2 . What is the matrix [T ]B B1 ? What is

1

the matrix [T ]B
B2 ? Suppose you choose basis B1 for the domain and
2

B2 for the codomain. Then what is the matrix of T ? Suppose instead

you choose basis B2 for the domain and B1 for the range. Then what
is the matrix of T ?

4. Let C1 = {f1 , f2 , f3 } be the dual basis of B1 and let C2 = {g1 , g2 , g3 }

be the dual basis of B2 .

(a) Find f1 (x), f2 (z), f3 (x + y + z), g1 (x + y + z), g2 (y) and g3 (z + 2x).

(b) Write g2 as a linear combination of f1 , f2 , f3
(c) Write f2 as a linear combination of g1 , g2 , g3

Mandatory problems
1. Let V be a vector space of dimension n over field F and f : V F
be a linear functional. What can be the dimensions of kernel(f ) ? Let
W V be a subspace of dimension n 1. Prove that there exists a
linear functional g V such that kernel(g) = W .

2. Let V be a finite dimensional vector space over F . Let f, g be in V .

Suppose kernel(f ) kernel(g). Show that g = af for some a F .

3. Let T : V W be a linear map between finite dimensional vector

spaces. Show that T is injective if and only if T t : W V is onto.

1. Let V be an n dimensional vector space over field F . Show that there
is a one to one correspondence between m dimensional subspaces and
(n m) dimensional subspaces of V

2. Let F be an infinite field and V again be an n dimensional space over

it. Let x1 . . . , xr be any finite collection of nonzero vectors in V . Show
that there is an f V such that each f (xi ) 6= 0.
