Applications Software2
Applications Software2
They are programs which allow you to perform tasks. Application software
includes everything from gaming software to spreadsheet programs. Typically, application
software will need to be installed on your computer. These programs come on CD-ROM,
floppy disks, or can be downloaded from the Internet.
Some of the most common types of business applications software include:
• Word Processing Applications.
• Spreadsheet Applications
• Presentation Applications — combine images, animations, sound, and video to create
multimedia presentations.
• Database Applications — control tables of data and allow those tables to be searched and
reorganized.
• Sound and Video Software — produce and edit digital audio and digital video.
• Graphics Software — create and manipulate digital images using brushes and filters. You
may use other types of applications on your personal computer at home, including video
games, CD-ROM based encyclopedias, and educational programs.
Most software applications are copyrighted and require you to own a licensed copy of the
software. Some copyrighted applications may not be distributed.
Copying an application without permission is known as software piracy, and it is a crime.
Application software known as shareware is programs which you can distribute, but they
still cost money. Each person who uses shareware is responsible for registering the software
and paying the applicable fee. Freeware software is also copyrighted, but can be distributed
and costs no money.
Often application software programs will be packaged together and sold as one more product
known as a “suite.” Microsoft combined Word 2002, Excel 2002, Access 2002, and
PowerPoint 2002 into the Office XP suite, by far the most widely used of all the application
suites. Microsoft also offers the Works Suite, which is less expensive than Office and
includes a full version of Word. Other suites include Corels WordPerfect Office 2002, Lotus’
SmartSuite, and Suns StarOffice.
FreeThink is a new entry in the application suite market. It is sold on a subscription basis,
and offers free online storage.
Each application window includes:
• Title bar — contains the name of the application and the current file.
• Menu bar — click a menu name to view the list of commands. Click a command to
execute the command.
• Toolbar — groups of buttons that allow quick access to common commands.
• Help — area for you to learn more about how to do things in the application.

pressing the Enter key to create a new paragraph. You can assign a paragraph its own style
to make it stand out from the rest of the document.
• Tables — used to organize data into columns and rows.
• Charts — display data in a graphic format.
• Graphics — Clip Art or line drawings can be added to documents.
• Find and replace — searches for any word or phrase in the document. Also, allows all
instances of a word to be replaced by another word.
• Spelling and grammar — checks for errors in spelling and grammar and offers solutions to
the problems.
Spreadsheet Applications
They use formulas and functions to perform calculations and financial projections.
Originally, spreadsheet applications were viewed as electronic versions of an accountant’s
ledger. Today’s spreadsheet applications can do much more than just calculate numbers—
they include powerful charting and data analysis features. Spreadsheet programs can be
used for everything from personal budgets to calculating loan payments.
some basic features of a spreadsheet application:
• Worksheet — an electronic version of an accountant’s worksheet. Most spreadsheet
applications allow you to combine many worksheets into a single workbook.
• Row — runs horizontally across the screen and is designated by a number.
• Column — runs vertically up and down the screen and is designated by a letter.
• Cell — the intersection of a row and column, designated by the letter of the column,
followed by the number of the row. For example, cell A4 is the first cell (A) in the fourth row
(4).
• Formula — calculation which is entered into a cell. The result of the calculation is
displayed in the cell. Formulas can reference numbers or the values of other cells.
• Enter, manipulate, calculate, and chart data on worksheets
• Workbook - is a collection of worksheets
• Function — preset formula for common calculations such as calculating totals and
averages, figuring loan payments, and estimating future values.
Specialized financial software is available for bookkeeping and tax preparation. These
programs incorporate some of the functionality of a spreadsheet program, but they utilize a
user-friendly interface. For example, rather than developing your own budget spreadsheet
in a spreadsheet application, you may want to purchase a personal finance application (such

as Intuit’s Quicken® or Microsoft® Money 2002 Deluxe).
Spreadsheet programs on the market today, including Microsoft Excel, Lotus’ 1-2-3, and
Corel’s Quattro Pro.
