Non-Routine Problems (5 Questions)

The document describes a non-routine problem involving transporting a fox, duck, and bag of seaweed across a river while avoiding any items being eaten. It then provides two solutions to the problem - drawing a diagram to map out the steps, and simulating the process. It also includes two additional word problems about the distance traveled by people moving at different speeds, and calculating a fisherman's wages based on the number of fish caught. The document demonstrates solving non-routine problems through understanding the problem, devising a plan such as making a diagram or table, carrying out the plan, and checking the answer.

Non-routine Problems (5 questions)

1) In this puzzle you must help a villager get a fox, a duck, and a bag of seaweed
safely across a river in a boat. The villager may only take one thing at a time in
the boat. She cannot leave the fox and the duck together on either side of the
river, or the fox will eat the duck. Likewise, she cannot leave the duck alone with
the bag of seaweed or the duck will eat the seaweed. How can the villager get
everything across the river without anything being eaten?

First Solution: Draw a diagram

 Step 1: understanding the problem

Across the river in a boat

One thing at a time

Cannot leave them unattended (fox will eat duck or duck will eat seaweed)

Way to carry everything across the river safely

 Step 2: Devise a plan

-Draw a diagram

 Step 3: Carry out the plan

Duck Fox Seaweed

No Item being took Item left behind Result

. away
1. X

The duck will eat the

seaweed.
2.

The fox will not eat

the seaweed.

3. X

The duck will be

eaten by the fox.

 Step 4: Check the Answer

1st: the villager will take the duck across the river
2nd: the villager will take the fox and bring back the duck
3rd: the villager will take the seaweed
4rd: the villager will finally take the duck across the river again.

Second Solution: Simulation

 Step 1: understanding the problem

Across the river in a boat

One thing at a time

Cannot leave them unattended ( fox will eat duck or duck will eat
seaweed)

Way to carry everything across the river safely

 Step 2: Devise a plan

Simulation

 Step 3: Carry out the plan

Fox, Seaweed Duck

Seaweed Fox Duck

Duck Fox
Seaweed
Duck Seaweed

Duck
Step 4:
1st : the villager will take the duck across the river
2nd: the villager will take the fox and bring back the duck
3rd: the villager will take the seaweed
4rd: the villager will finally take the duck across the river again.

Question 2:

Junsu and Micky are 48 miles apart. Junsu travels at 10 miles per hour from
Seoul to Jeju, while Micky travels at 2 miles per hour from Jeju to Seoul. If both
set out at the same time, how many miles will Junsu have to travel before
meeting Micky?

Solution:
 Step 1: Understanding the problem

Junsu and Micky are 48miles apart.

Junsu travels at 10 miles per hour(X).

Micky travels at 2 miles per hour(X).

They set out at the same time.

Miles that junsu will travel before meeting Micky.

 Step 2: Devise a plan

Draw a diagram

 Step 3: Carry out the plan Junsu

10m 10m 10m 10m 2m 2m 2m 2m
Micky

48m
 Step 4: Check the Answer
Junsu + Micky = 48m
40m + 8m = 48m
Question 3:

Yunho is a fisherman. If he catches three fish, he will get 2coins. If he catches 5

fish, he will get 5 coins. Today, he has twenty one fishes on his boat. How much
is his wages?

Solution:

 Step 1: Understand the problem

Yunho will get 2 coins for 3 fish.
Yunho will get 5 coins for 5 fish.
Today he has 21 fishes.
Count on the wages that he will receive today.

 Step 2: Devises a plan

Draw a diagram

6 15

3 3 5 5 5

$2 $2 $5 $5 $5

 Step 4: Check the Answer

 2+ 2+ 5+ 5+5= $19
Solution2

 Step 1: Understand the problem

Yunho will get 2 coins for 3 fish.
Yunho will get 5 coins for 5 fish.
Today he has 21 fishes.
Count on the wages that he will receive today.

 Step 2: Devises a plan

Work Backward

 Step 3: Carry out the plan

21 fish= 15 + 6
15 / 5 = 3
6 /3 =2
3 x $5 = $15
2 x $2 = $4

Step 4: Check the Answer

$ 15 + $4= $19

4) Suppose a pair tigers will produce a new pair of tigers in their second
month, and thereafter will produce a new pair every month. The new tigers
will do exactly the same. Start with one pair. How many pairs will there be in
10 months?

Method 1
Step 1 Understanding the problem.
1. To find the number of tiger between 10 month
2. To find the total number of tiger

Step 2 Plan the answer

Construct a table
1. Each pair of tiger has to wait for second month to give born.
2. Calculate the tiger according to the condition that is given.
Step 3 Acting out
1 (xy)
2 (xy+xy)
3 (xy+xy)(xy)
4 (xy+xy)(xy+xy)(xy)
5 (xy+xy)(xy+xy)(xy+xy)(xy)(xy)
6 (xy+xy)(xy+xy)(xy+xy)(xy+xy)(xy+xy)(xy)(xy)(xy)
7 (xy+xy)(xy+xy)(xy+xy)(xy+xy)(xy+xy)(xy+xy)(xy+xy)(xy+xy)
(xy)(xy)(xy)(xy)(xy)
8 (xy+xy)(xy+xy)(xy+xy)(xy+xy)(xy+xy)(xy+xy)(xy+xy)(xy+xy)
(xy+xy)(xy+xy)(xy+xy)(xy+xy)(xy+xy)(xy)(xy)(xy)(xy)(xy)
(xy)(xy)(xy)
9 (xy+xy)(xy+xy)(xy+xy)(xy+xy)(xy+xy)(xy+xy)(xy+xy)(xy+xy)
(xy+xy)(xy+xy)(xy+xy)(xy+xy)(xy+xy)(xy+xy)(xy+xy)(xy+xy)
(xy+xy)(xy+xy)(xy+xy)(xy+xy)(xy+xy)(xy)(xy)(xy)(xy)(xy)(xy)
(xy)(xy)(xy)(xy)(xy)(xy)(xy)
10 (xy+xy)(xy+xy)(xy+xy)(xy+xy)(xy+xy)(xy+xy)(xy+xy)(xy+xy)
(xy+xy)(xy+xy)(xy+xy)(xy+xy)(xy+xy)(xy+xy)(xy+xy)(xy+xy)
(xy+xy)(xy+xy)(xy+xy)(xy+xy)(xy+xy)(xy+xy)(xy+xy)(xy+xy)
(xy+xy)(xy+xy)(xy+xy)(xy+xy)(xy+xy)(xy+xy)(xy+xy)(xy+xy)
(xy+xy)(xy+xy)(xy)(xy)(xy)(xy)(xy)(xy)(xy)(xy)(xy)(xy)(xy)(xy)
(xy)(xy)(xy)(xy)(xy)(xy)(xy)(xy)(xy)

xy= pair of tiger

Total number of pair tiger is 89 pair.

Step 4 Look Back

1. Determine whether the total number of pair tiger is recalculated.
2. Every step is apply in order to find number of rabbit.
