Displays and printers are output devices that visually convey information. Displays use a screen to present soft copy output, characterized by resolution, response time, brightness, and contrast ratio. There are two main types of printers: impact printers that physically contact the paper, and non-impact printers like inkjet and laser printers that form characters without contact through spraying or melting ink or toner. Non-impact printers also include photo, all-in-one, 3D, thermal, mobile, label, and large-format printers.

Displays
Characteristics and Types
OBJECTIVES: To explain the characteristics of various displays.
To summarize the various types of printers.
Display Is an output device that visually conveys text, graphics, and video information.
Consists of a screen and the components that produce the information
on the screen.
The information presented in the display is called soft copy.
Variety of Display Characteristics Resolution - number of horizontal and vertical pixels in a display.
Response time - time in milliseconds that it takes to turn a pixel on or off.
Brightness - measured in nits.
Dot Pitch - distance in millimeters between pixel on a display.
Contrast Ratio - difference in light intensity between the brightest white
and darkest black that can be produced on a display. Printers Output device that produces text and graphics on a physical medium.
Printed information, the printout, is called hard copy.
Types of Printer Nonimpact Printers - forms characters and graphics on a piece of paper without contacting the paper.
Impact Printers - forms characters
and graphics on a piece of paper by striking a mechanism against an inked ribbon that physically contacts the paper. Nonimpact Printers Ink-Jet Printers
- Forms characters and graphics by
spraying tiny drops of liquid ink onto a piece of paper. Nonimpact Printers Photo Printers
(MFP), is a single device that looks like a printer or a copy machine but provides functionality of a printer, scanner, copy machine, and perhaps a fax machine. Nonimpact Printers 3-D Printers
- Uses a process called additive
manufacturing to create an object by adding material to a three- dimensional object, one horizontal layer at a time. Nonimpact Printers Thermal Printers
- Generates images by pushing
electrically heated pins against heat-sensitive paper. Nonimpact Printers Mobile Printers
- Is a small, lightweight, battery-
powered printer that allows a mobile user to print from a laptop, smartphone, or other mobile device while traveling. Nonimpact Printers Label Printers
- A small printer that prints on an
adhesive-type material that can be placed on a variety of items such as envelopes, packages, optical discs, photos, and file folders. Nonimpact Printers Plotters and Large-Format Printers
- Sophisticated printers used to
produce high-quality drawings such as blueprints, maps, and circuit diagrams.
