This document contains a tutorial sheet from a Solid Mechanics course at Hindustan University School of Aeronautical Sciences. The tutorial sheet includes 4 practice problems related to determining mechanical properties such as Poisson's ratio, Young's modulus, and changes in length and diameter of materials under different tensile loads. Students are asked to calculate these properties and changes for bars and rods made of various materials using given dimensions, loads, and other mechanical data.

1. A bar of 30mm diameter is subjected to a pull of 60kN. The measured
extension on a gauge length of 200mm is 0.09mm and the change in diameter is 0.009mm. Calculate the Poissons ratio and the value of elastic constants.
2. An axial pull of 45 KN is applied on a steel bar of diameter 15 mm
and length 3 m. Calculate the change in length, diameter and volume of the bar if the Poissons ratio is 0.25. Take E=2x105 N/mm2.
3. A circular, metal rod of diameter 1 cm is loaded in tension. When the
tensile load is 5kN, the extension of a 25 cm length is measured accurately and found to be 0.0227 cm. Estimate the value of Youngs modulus, E, of the metal.
4. A bar of steel, having a rectangular cross-section 7.5 cm by 2.5 cm,
carries an axial tensile load of 180 kN. Estimate the decrease in the length of the sides of the cross-section if Youngs modulus, E, is 200 GN/m2 and Poissons ratio, v, is 0.3.
