Math 114 - Discussion 307 & 309

Worksheet 3( 9/18 Mon )

1. Find all points on the x-axis that are 16 units from the point (6, 8).

(x 6)2 + (0
(8))2 = 162 (x 6)2 = 256 64 = 192 x 6 = 192 = 8 3
x=68 3

(6 + 8 3, 0), (6 8 3, 0)

(You may use a quadratic formula!!)

2. Find the equation of line with x-intercept (7,0) and y-intercept (0,-4).
0 (4) 4 4
Slope= = . Thus, y = x 4
70 7 7

3. Find the equation of the line which is parallel to the line 8x y = 16 and contains
the point (0, 0).

Parallel lines have the same slopes. 8x y = 16 y = 8x + 16. The slope of

8x y = 16 is 8. We need to find the equation of the line whose slope is 8 and
containing (0, 0). Therefore y = 8x.

4. Find the equation of the line which is perpendicular to the line 9x + y = 81 and con-
tains the point (9, 1).

Perpendicular lines have slopes whose multiplication is 1. 9x + y = 81 y =

9x + 81. The slope of 9x + y = 81 is 9. Thus, we need to fine the equation of the
line whose slope is 19 and containing (9, 1). Therefore y = 19 (x 9) 1 = 19 x 2.

5. For the equation of circle x2 + y 2 2x 8y 19 = 0, find the center and the radius.
If any, find the x, y-intercepts.

By completing the square, the equation is (x 1)2 1 + (y 4)2 16 = 19 (x

1)2 + (y 4)2 = 36. Therefore, the center is (1, 4)
and the radius
is 6. For x-intercepts,

2
we put y = 0 and then (x 1) = 20 x 1 = 20 = 2 5 x = 1 2 5. Thus,
there are two x-intercepts (1 + 2 5, 0) and (1 2 5, 0). For
y-intercepts, put x = 0
2
and this implies (y 4) = 35 y 4 = 35 y = 4 35. Thus, there are two
y-intercepts (0, 4 + 35) and (0, 4 35).

6. For the equation of circle 2x2 + 2y 2 16x + 8y 10 = 0, find the center and the radius.
If any, find the x, y-intercepts.

2x2 +2y 2 16x+8y 10 = 0 x2 +y 2 8x+4y 5 = 0 (x4)2 16+(y +2)2 4 =

5 (x 4)2 + (y + 2)2 = 25. Therefore the center is
(4, 2) and the radius is 5.
2
When y = 0, we have (x 4) = 21 x 4 = 21 x = 4 21. Thus
there are two x-intercepts (4 + 21, 0) and (4 21, 0). When x = 0, we have
(y + 2)2 = 9 y + 2 = 3 y = 2 3. Thus there are two y-intercepts (0, 1) and
(0, 5).

x
7. Find the followings for the function f (x) = .
x2 +1
(a) f (0) = 0

9 9
(b) f (9) = =
81 + 1 82
x
(c) f (x) = 2
x +1
x x
(d) f (x) = = 2
x2 +1 x +1
x+3 x+3
(e) f (x + 3) = 2
= 2
(x + 3) + 1 x + 6x + 10
4x
(f) f (4x) =
16x2 + 1
