Department of Electrical Engineering Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur EE 618 Home Assignment #1 Assigned: 4/8/17 Due: 11/8/17

This document is a home assignment from an Electrical Engineering course at IIT Kanpur. It contains 5 questions asking students to: 1) Determine nearest neighbor distances and numbers for different lattice structures and identify the closest and most spread out. 2) Calculate hard sphere packing fractions to find the densest and most sparse structures. 3) Calculate the theoretical and experimental densities of NaCl. 4) Find the tetrahedral bonding angle in silicon. 5) Determine the lattice constant of InGaAs and the best substrate match for minimal defects.

EE 618 Home Assignment #1 Assigned: 4/8/17 Due: 11/8/17

1. Determine the nearest and the second nearest neighbor distances, and the number of nearest
and second nearest neighbors of sc, bcc, fcc, and diamond lattices with lattice constant a.

2. Find the maximum fractions of the unit cell volume that can be filled by hard spheres (close
packing model) in the sc, bcc, fcc, and diamond lattices. Hence, identify the lattices that
have the most and the least void spaces respectively.

3. Sodium Chloride (NaCl) is a cubic crystal that differs from a simple cubic structure in that
alternating atoms are different, i.e., each Na atom is surrounded by six nearest neighbor Cl
atoms, and vice versa. The ionic radii of Na+ (atomic weight 23) and Cl (atomic weight

35.5) are 1.0 A and 1.8 A respectively. Treating the ions as hard spheres, calculate the
density of NaCl. Compare this with the measured density of 2.17 g/cm3.

4. The tetrahedral bonding scheme of Si was shown in class. Using this structure, and the basic
unit cell of the diamond lattice, determine the tetrahedral bonding angle of Si.

5. Determine the lattice constant of the ternary compound In0.4Ga0.6As. Hence, state which of
the following substrates would create the most defect free interface while growing this

ternary compound on it: GaSb (a = 6.095 A ), InP (a = 5.867 A ), or InSb (a = 6.479 A ). It

is given that the lattice constants for InAs and GaAs are 6.058 A and 5.653 A respectively.
