MECHANICAL ENGINEERING DRAWING

This paper has TWO sections: Section I, Assembly Drawing, and Section II, Sketch and Design OR
3D Solid Model Design Drawing.

Answer ONE question from Section I and ONE question from Section II.
Candidates MAY use EITHER the Traditional Drawing Method OR the Computer-Aided Drafting
Method.

SECTION I _ ASSEMBLY DRAWING

Answer ONE question from this section.

Do NOT spend more than 2Yzhours on this section.

t. Figure 1, on one of the enclosed sheets, shows the first-angle orthographic projection details of
the parts that make up a Valve Assembly. In assembly, the valve, part (4), is fitted into the body,
part (1). The spring, part (5), is then fitted onto the valve with the collar, part (3), resting on top
of the spring. The cover, part (2), is then fitted over the assembled collar, spring and valve, then
it is screwed onto the body. The bolt, part (6), is screwed into the cover to secure the collar onto
the spring and valve.

(a) Draw, FULL SIZE, in either flrst-angle or third-angle orthographic projection, the
following views of the assembled parts:

(i) A full sectional front elevation taken on cutting plane 'X-X'.

(ii) A plan. Show all hidden details.

(b) Show SIX main dimensions to include a length, a diameter, a radius and a metric screw
thread specification.

(c) Print the title, "Valve Assembly", and the scale used. Show the projection method used by
symbol.

NOTE: All unspecified fillet radii are 5 mm.

2. Figure 2, on one of the enclosed sheets, shows the first-angle orthographic projection details
of the parts that make up an Adjustable Spindle Assembly. In assembly, the spindle, part (3), is
screwed vertically into the body, part (1). The cover, part (2), is then fitted onto the assembled
body and spindle, and secured with the four M5 bolts, part (4).

(a) Draw, FULL SIZE, in either, first-angle or third-angle orthographic projection, the
following views of the assembled parts:

(i) A fulI sectional front elevation taken on cutting plane 'B-B'.

(ii) An end view looking from the direction of arrow 'A'. Show all hidden details.

(b) Show SIX main dimensions to include a length, a diameter, a radius and a metric screw
thread specification.

(c) Printthetitle,"AdjustableSpindleAssembly",andthescaleused. Showtheprojectionmethod

used by symbol.

NOTE: All fillet radii are 5 mm.

SECTION II _ SKETCH AND DESIGN OR 3D SOLID MODEL DESIGN DRAWING

Answer ONE question from this section.

3. Figure 3 shows three orthographic views in first-angle projection of a Wedge Block. Make an
isometric drawing TWICE FULL SIZE of the wedge block with 'X' as the lowest point of the
drawing.

DO NOT reproduce the given views.

4. Figure 4 shows a part sectional sketch of two pieces of material secured by a nut and bolt assembly.
The nut may become loose by vibration.

You are required to make neat, well-proportioned orthographic sketches of the assembly in section
to illustrate THREE of the following locking devices which may solve this problem.

(a) Split pin

(b) Lock nut

(c) Lock washer

(d) Castle nut

(e) Slotted nut
