2. A factory producing bulbs uses three types of machines A, B and C which respectively contribute
25%, 35%, and 40% of the bulbs produced by the factory. 5% of the bulb produced by machine A, 4% by
machine B, and 2% by machine C are found to be defective. Find the probability that a randomly selected
bulb, produced by the machine B given that it is not defective. [5 marks]
4. In order to obtain a random sample of people who live in her town, Farhanah chooses people at
random from the telephone directory for her town
a) What is a random sample? Give a reason why Farhanahs method will not give a random
sample of people who live in the town. [2 marks]
Farhanah now uses a valid method to choose a random sample of 200 people from her town and
finds that 38 live in apartments.
b) Calculate an approximate 99% confidence interval for the proportion of all people in
Farhanahs town who live in apartments. [4 marks]
c) Farhanah uses the same sample to give a confidence interval of width 0.1 for this proportion.
This interval is a x% confidence level. Find the value of x. [3 marks]
5. The standard treatment for dengue fever has a probability 0.4 of success. A pharmacist has
undertaken research in Kota Tinggi and has produced a new drug which has been successful with 11 out
of 20 patients upon whom he has tested. Test the pharmacists claim, at the 5% level of significance.
Should the pharmacist continue to prescribe the drug? [6 marks]
6. A printing machine requires slight adjustment which appears to be randomly distributed. The
number of adjustments made in a month over a period of 90 months is recorded. The data obtained is
shown in table below.
Number of adjustments 0 1 2 3 4 5
Number of months 3 16 22 30 12 7
Give a reason why the number of adjustment per month may have a Poisson distribution.[2 marks]
Carry out a chi-squared test, at 5% significance level, to determine whether a Poisson distribution with a
mean of 2.8 fits the data. [9 marks]

7. a) An independent random sample is taken from a normally distributed population with mean 80
and variance 25. Determine the smallest sample size so that the sample mean exceeds the population
mean by at least 2 with a probability not exceeding 0.01. [5 marks]
b) A teacher notes the time that she takes to drive to school. She finds that, over a long period, the
mean time is 24.5 minutes. After a new bypass is opened, she notes the time on 72 randomly chosen
journeys to school. Her results are summarized by
= 215 , = 3234
where x minutes in the time for a journey.
i) Determine the unbiased estimates for population mean and variance. [3 marks]
ii) State the parameter of the study. What is the significance of the value 72. [2 marks]
iii) Using 5% significance level, test whether the journey now takes less time. [5 marks]
8. a) A sound device has 5 similar electronic components. The lifespan in hours, for each of the
electronic components which is functioning are independent and is a random variable with the probability
1 - 500t
e , t0
density function given as f(t) = 500
0 , otherwise
i) Show that the expected lifespan for each of the electronic component in the device is 500 hours.
[4 marks]
ii) Show that the probability that each of the electronic component is spoil after operate for not
more than 500 hours is 0.632. [3 marks]
iii) Find the probability that exactly 2 electronic components spoil after operate for not more than
500 hours. [3 marks]
