Integrated religious belief system:
SOR Syllabus Extract: Introduction to Religious Depth Studies
This syllabus considers the five major religious traditions to be Buddhism,
Christianity, Hinduism, Islam and Judaism.

The purpose of this section is to develop a comprehensive view of religious

traditions as living religious systems that link directly with the life of
adherents. Elements raised in the Nature of Religion and Beliefs are covered in
greater depth in the study of a religious tradition. In a Religious Tradition Study, the
particular focus is on the ways in which a religious tradition, as an integrated belief
system, provides a distinctive answer to the enduring questions of human
existence.

Overview of the Question

This question was a holistic examination of the Religious Depth Study component of
the syllabus. Usually the term used to explain how the person, ethics, practice links
to the lives of adherents is the concept of living religious tradition. As can be seen
above, the syllabus also uses the term integrated belief system. According to the
syllabus, this term refers to how each religious belief tradition provides a unique
response to trying to answer enduring questions (philosophical questions) about
human existence: what is the purpose of life? What am I called to do? Where do I go
when I die?
The question is therefore asking how do at least 2 parts of the depth study of
Christianity or Judaism try to answer these questions.
The quote provided in each question was a clue to the answer. To interpret the
quotes you needed to remember the principal beliefs from Year 11.
Christianity:
Time promised by God Reference to the promise by God of a Messiah for the
chosen people (Jewish adherents). This is a key way in
which God revealed (revelation) himself to the world.

Kingdom of God is near This refers to the promise of salvation, Jesus spoke of
heaven as the Kingdom of God. He also spoke and taught
us how to create the Kingdom of God on earth. This could
be achieved through applying the lessons of Jesus as
taught through the sacred text and making the beliefs
part of an adherents living religious system.
Repent your sins Ask for forgiveness of sins before God examination of
conscience, decisions is basis of an adherents
relationship with God. This can be seen through the 10
Commandments, Beatitudes, and Sermon on the Mount.

Believe the good news The Good News refers explicitly to the belief in the death
and resurrection of Jesus. In this way, through this action,
the promise of salvation can be realised.

Judaism:
Lord commanded us The Lord commanded (ordered) us: reference to the
divine laws given by God through Moses at Mount Sinai

Perform these statutes We are obligated to do as a the lord ordered us to do to

follow the statutes (laws)

To fear the lord, our God is to be honoured, feared and respected, God is all-
God powerful. God is to be obeyed and honoured through the
choices Jewish adherents make about how to honour
God in their lives and keep the law.

For our good all the Jewish people cannot forget the Jewish history tells of
days Gods favour to the Jewish people through the covenant.
The promises to obey God is the only way to ensure the
covenant endures.

To keep us alive as of This refers explicitly to the covenant made between God
this day and his chosen people: The Jewish people had to obey
and honour his laws in return for being his chosen people
(receiving a promised land of milk and honey and as
many descendants as the stars in the sky ie to keep us
alive, to allow our people to survive and endure)

Response Structure:
1. Introduction: Definition of integrated belief system, unpack the quote and link
to at least TWO depth studies to be explored in the question
2. Depth Studies: How does the depth study enable (allow) Jewish or Christians
to experience (live) an integrated belief system based on Kingdom of God or
the Covenant.
3. Conclusion: Link between depth studies to demonstrate how they allow
adherents to live out the promise of the Kingdom of God OR Covenant.

Case Studies:
The information provided in your case studies had to prove HOW it enabled
adherents, both as individuals and communities, to live out the integrated belief
system according to your definition of this term.
It is vital to use the information on your case study to build an argument. Consider
what is the most important information to include to demonstrate how the
person/school of thought, ethics and/or practice allows individuals and community
to build and create an integrated belief system.
Case studies should include the following information:
Person/school of thought
Context of person/school of thought
What the person/school of thought did
How they impacted on the understanding of the religion key is exact
information, not broad sweeping statements
Quotes to sacred text, etc
Link to the quote (throughout the paragraph/s) and to integrated religious
belief system
Ethics
Identification of the ethical area environmental, sexual or bioethics
Explanation of the principles behind the area of ethics e.g. principles of
creation of life, protection of life as part of Gods creation, link to general
ethical principles
Case study application: what is the general teachings of the case study, variant
or denominational differences and reasons for their differences
Scriptural references
Link to quote and integrated religious belief system
Practice
What is the reason for the practice link to principle beliefs
How does the practice reflect the beliefs of the adherents could include ritual
steps, symbols
Denominational differences
All links to quote and integrated religious belief system
Links to sacred text WITH references

Key tips:
Dont panic when you read the question
Breakdown the quote, think holistic links to Year 11
Identify how many and what components of the depth studies you need to
focus on
Formulate an argument incorporating key elements of the question, link to
stimulus and case studies
Tell the markers what you know about the depth studies in order to prove your
argument
If still unsure, identify the Year 12 case study you need to write about and tell
the markers what you know about the case study
Dont provide an answer without Year 12 content in it
