SUBSURFACE SAFETY VALVE MANUFACTURING MATERIALS FOR SERVICE ENVIRONMENTS

Service Category Material Description CO2 Range *
Standard Service Material for non-corrosive environments or environments containing small 0 - 7 psi
(Non-corrosive Sweet Crude or Gas) amounts of H2S within specified limits as defined in the Nace Standard MR-01-75.
H2S Service (Often combined with standard service) Materials meet Nace Standard MR-01-75 0 - 7 psi
(Hydrogen Sulfide) requirement for metals subjected to hydrogen sulfide environments.
H2S and Mild CO2 Service Materials in flowpath have 9% minimum chrome content to minimize weight loss 0 - 30 psi
(Hydrogen Sulfide and Trace of Carbon Dioxide due to CO2 attack. Parts not in the flow path may use alloy steels. (Tubing Retrievable)
H2S and CO2 Service Materials throughout have 9% minimum chrome content for protection 7+ psi (Wireline)
(Hydrogen Sulfide and Carbon Dioxide) against H2S and CO2 attack. 30+ psi (Tubing Retrievable)
Special Corrosive Service For environments involving free chlorides, inhibitors, excessive temperatures, etc..., the Marketing Group in
(salts, inhibitors, etc.) Broken Arrow should be consulted.
* Selection of service categories depends on the partial pressure of the CO2 (%CO2 times the total well pressure divided by 100). Example: Ensures 3000 psi shut-in pressure and 5% CO2 (MOL.%).
The partial CO2 pressure is: 5% x 300 psi = 150 psi. In this instance, the partial CO2 pressure is greater than 30 psi. Therefore an H2S and CO2 service valve would be recommended.

THE BAKER OIL TOOLS

ULTRA STRONG FLAPPER
The one thing that counts in the opera-
tional and safety control of any well is the
performance of the safety valves clo-
sure mechanism. For sound reliability,
Baker Oil Tools' Safety Systems has
developed the most rugged, depend-
able flapper closure mechanisms in the
industry the Dual-Hinge Wedge-
Shaped Flapper System.

FEATURES/BENEFITS
Heavy duty hinge pin and torsion spring
Valves open under 100 psi differential
pressure without damage due to le-
verage gained by moving the initial
contact point with flow tube away from
the hinge
Three point contact wedge shape mini-
mizes loading on the hinge and hinge
pin
Strenuous prototype testing with ve-
locity gas, slam tests at flow rates a
minimum of 10 times those proposed
by API
During slam closure, the flow tube
hydraulically absorbs the shock, not
the valve seat
Flapper swings completely out of flow
path and the flow tube protects the
flapper and the seat, preventing dam-
age by wireline tools and produced
fluids or contaminates
Every flapper system includes a tor-
sion spring which returns the flapper
to full closed, sealing position without
the assistance of well pressure

In the oil tools industry, two equaliz-

system consists of an equalizing plunger,
an equalizing spring, and an equalizing

SUBSURFACE SAFETY SYSTEMS

Baker Oil Tools first brought to the oil industry the FV-Series Safety Valves
and continues to offer this line to meet special customer requirements;
however, advances in safety valve design has led Baker to offer the new

T-Series Safety Valves. This new design brings the next level of
technological and manufacturing enhancements to the safety valve market.

T-SERIES NON-ELASTOMERIC TUBING

RETRIEVABLE SAFETY VALVES
PREMIUM FEATURES IN A STANDARD
LINE SAFETY VALVE
The T-Series Tubing Retrievable Safety Valves bring the advantages of
non-elastomeric sealing technology to standard operating environments.
Now, the same field-proven features that ensure high performance and
extended life in premium applications are also available for lower-end
applications.
Premium two-step, metal-to-metal housing connections and a thermo-
plastic dynamic sealing system eliminate all elastomeric seals and thus
greatly increase the valves service life. In addition to non-elastomeric
technology, the T-Series incorporates a number of other features from
successful high temperature/high pressure safety valves. Among these are
the patented Dual-Hinge Wedge-Shaped Flapper Closure Mechanism, and
an optional patented Through-The-Flapper Self-Equalizing System.
These features, combined with a unique control fluid communication
system that eliminates the possibility of premature actuation, make the T-
Series the most rugged, reliable, and fail-safe surface controlled, subsur-
face safety valves available for standard service.

ULTRA-STRONG CLOSURE MECHANISM

The T-Series Safety Valves, like all Baker Oil Tools conventional tubing-
and wireline retrievable safety valves, use a flapper closure mechanism that
has proven to be practically indestructible. The heart of this mechanism is
the most rugged flapper on the market. It is thicker than those of comparable
valves and is wedge-shaped rather than flat to minimize loading on the hinge
and flapper pin. A unique hinge design virtually eliminates flapper pin
bending. Each valve is tested to withstand slam opens against differential
pressure at full rated control chamber pressure with no damage to the
flapper, hinge, or flapper pin.

PREVENTS PREMATURE ACTUATION OF

COMMUNICATION SYSTEM
Premature actuation of the control fluid communication system is the primary
cause of safety valve failures. T-Series valves incorporate a revolutionary
communication system that eliminates the possibility of accidental actuation
while running wireline tools through the valve.
The radial communication systems design removes the mechanism from
Model T-5 Model TM-5 the valve and puts it in the wireline tool. The T-Series valve has a smooth

wireline tools. Communication is achieved by radial motion of a one-trip, jar-
down, wireline tool. No linear motion means no chance of inadvertent
activation by other tools.

T-SERIES ACCESSORY TOOLS

Bakers philosophy in the development of the T-Series Safety Valves is to present a complete safety system to the customer that
is backed by a full range of our own accessory equipment that may be required throughout the life of the well.

CONTROL PRESSURE PENETRATOR

COMMUNICATION TOOL
Product No. 822-81
The Control Pressure Penetrator Communication Tool is de-
signed to establish control line communication to the tubing
through the ID of a tubing retrievable safety valve or landing nipple.
Communication is achieved by radial motion of this one-trip, jar-
down, wireline tool which punctures a hole in the communication
area of the tubing retrievable equipment. By removing the
communication mechanism (typically linear motion sleeves) from
the tubing retrievable equipment, this unique system eliminates
the possibilty of accidental actuation while running wireline tools.

FLAPPER LOCK-OPEN TOOL

Product No. 822-80
The Flapper Lock-Open Tool is designed to deposit an expanding
sleeve into the flapper section of the valve to permanently retain
it in the open position. The tool is run on wireline and locked in
place in the nipple adapter of the valve. Withdrawal of the wireline
running tool actuates the Flapper Lock-Open Tool. The tool is
designed such that the expanding sleeve cannot be released into
the flapper section if the flow tube is in the open position.

MODEL K SEPARATION SLEEVE

Product No. 820-04
The Model K Separation Sleeve is a wireline retrievable tool used
to blank-off the hydraulic chamber in a locked open tubing retriev-
able safety valve to prevent contamination of the control medium
with well fluids. The separation sleeve is recommended when a
tubing retrievable valve is permanently locked-open and produc-
tion is scheduled to continue without an operable safety valve. A
separation sleeve is also recommended when pulling the string
with a locked open safety valve.
When a lock is assembled to the separation sleeve, the model
designation is expanded to include the lock model and the first
letter of the safety valve model designation. Example: A model Control Pressure Model K

T-SERIES BACKUP VALVE SYSTEM

WIRELINE RETRIEVABLE
INSERT SAFETY VALVES
Product Nos. 820-40, 822-40 (V),
820-91, 822-91 (VD)

The V-Series Wireline Retrievable Insert Safety Valves, at-
tached to safety valve locks, are designed to be run and set in a
permanently locked open T-Series Tubing Safety Valve. The
insert valve straddles the tubing retrievable valve from top to
bottom and uses the same control line that previously operated the
tubing retrievable safety valve.
For T-Series Safety Valves located in the tubing at less than

1000 ft deep, the Model V should be the backup valve. For T-

Series Safety Valves set deeper than 1000 ft, the Model VD
should be the backup valve.
Both models are available with Bakers patented Thru-The-
Flapper Self-Equalizing System.
Both models are also adaptable to competitor locks. For
detailed information on Models V and VD Wireline Retrievable
Safety Valves, please refer to that section of this catalog (pages 18
and 19).
When V or VD Insert Safety Valves are assembled to a
safety valve lock, the model designation is expanded to include the
lock model and the first letter of the tubing retrievable safety valve

model designation. Example: A Model TAFVE Insert Safety

Valve is a Model VE Insert Safety Valve assembled to a Model
AF Lock to be landed in a permanently locked open T-Series
Tubing Retrievable Safety Valve.

Model X Prongs are used to hold the wireline insert safety
valve in the open position during run-in. The X Prong is attached
to the running shank or probe and extended to the flapper of the
insert valve. When ordering, specify the lock model designation to
ensure compatibility.

MODEL FV6S TUBING RETRIEVABLE SAFETY VALVE

Product No. 824-30
The FV6S Valve utilizes a curved-shaped flapper and seat to obtain a reduced major
outside diameter to allow installation in completions where tubing-to-casing clearance
is a concern. The strength and integrity of the flapper-hinge mechanism has not been
sacrificed.
Normally closed, this valve is opened by application of hydraulic control pressure
via a small diameter hydraulic control line connecting the valve to the surface
emergency shutdown system. Loss of hydraulic control pressure for any reason will
close the valve and shut-in the well.

824-72(VDES), 823-75(VQD)
The V-Series Safety Valves offer a wide range of wireline safety equipment employing a
modular concept to allow flexibility and adaptability to existing and new completions. V-Series
Safety Valves may be supplied as a sub-assembly for attachment to a Baker Safety Valve Lock,
as a complete assembly including lock, or as a sub-assembly with adapter to competitor lock.
The V-Series Safety Valves are flapper-type, wireline retrievable, fail-safe, subsurface
safety valves. When assembled to an appropriate lock, they run and land in a safety valve
nipple. Hydraulic control line connects the safety valve nipple to the surface emergency shut-
down system. Loss of control line pressure will close the valve and shut in the well.
When V-Series Safety Valves are assembled to a safety valve lock, the model designation
is expanded to include the lock and the safety valve nipple into which it is landed. Example:

a Model BAAFV Safety Valve is comprised of a Model V Safety Valve assembled to a

Model AF Lock and is landed in a Model BA Safety Valve Nipple.

NIPPLE ADAPTERS, Product Nos. 824-90 and 824-93

BOTTOM SUBS, Product Nos. 824-94 and 824-97
The T-Series Safety Valves have a modular design. The nipple adapter, and bottom sub are
separate itemized products which make up the valve assembly. A wide variety of locking
profiles and seal bore sizes are available to accommodate Baker locks and competitor locks.
Utilizing a design that incorporates seal bores in the nipple adapters and bottom subs
guarantees complete isolation of the valve should any malfunction occur. Through the
implementation of modular design, nipple adapters and bottom subs for T and M series
valves are ordered as separate items. Tubing threads, locking profile, and seal bore size
should be specified when ordering these items.

MODEL J-3 AND J-4 WIRELINE RETRIEVABLE INJECTION VALVES

Product No. 808-40 and 808-89
The Model J-3 and J-4 Injection Valves are normally closed valves that are designed to automati-
cally shut-in the tubing in the event injection is stopped or flow reverses. Injection pressure opens the
valve by creating a pressure drop across the orifice that allows the spring guide to push past the flapper
to the open position. When injection ceases, the spring guide allows the flapper to close. The J-3 and
J-4 Injection Valve Sub Assemblies are compatible with any of Bakers wireline locks.

Model Product Closure Control Working Corrosive

Name No. Type Type Pressure Environment Temperature

J-3 808-40 6000 psi (422Kg/Cm2)

Flapper Injection As Required 20 to 275F
J-4 808-89 Flow 10,000 psi (703Kg/Cm2) (-7 to 135C)

FEATURES/BENEFITS
Large bore allows unrestricted flow and protection of sealing areas and flapper valve from the direct
flow
Wireline retrievable valve can be run and retrieved under pressure by conventional wireline
methods

MODEL A-3 AND A-4 WIRELINE RETRIEVABLE

VELOCITY SAFETY VALVES
Product No. 808-44 and 808-47
The Models A-3 and A-4 Safety Valves are normally open-type valves that are closed by well flow
in excess of the valves preset closure flow rate. If loss of normal well control occurs at the surface, any
increase in flow velocity causes the valve to close, thus shutting in the well downhole. The valve will
re-open once pressures across the closed pressure are equalized. The A-3 and A-4 have an
equalizing sub-assembly which permits self-equalizing prior to retrieving the valve, and are compatible
with any of Bakers wireline locks.
Adjustment of the valve closure mechanism is accomplished by changing the orifice size and
internal spring rate. This requires specific well information and is accomplished through the use of
Bakers computer program designed for this purpose. Please consult your Baker representative for
exact information required.

ANNULUS CONTROL SAFETY VALVES

Annulus Control Safety Valves are control line actuated valves which attach directly to the top of the Twin-
Seal Submersible Pump Packer, Product No. 785-40. Both valves are used to control the flow of annulus gas
across the Twin-Seal packer. Applications include venting for submersible pump completions or injecting for
gas injection completions. Loss of control line pressure results in closure of both valve models, thus they are
fail-safe closed. Both valves will withstand 5000 psi burst.

MODEL VR VENT SAFETY VALVE

Product No. 820-90
The Model VR Vent Safety Valve is a normally closed valve which is opened by the application of control
line pressure (1500 psi plus shut-in pressure) and has a rated working pressure of 2500 psi. Control chamber
test pressure is 10,000 psi. Fail-safe setting depth is 1300 ft with hydraulic fluid in the control line.
An optional feature of the VR is activation of a recirculation port in the twin-seal packer. Upon loss of
control line pressure this feature allows pumped fluid to be recirculated from tubing to annulus below the
packer.
Application of pressure to the annulus above the Twin-Seal Packer will open the VR valve. If necessary,
this feature can be used to kill the well.

MODEL AGV (ANNULUS GAS VENT) VALVE

Product No. 995-03
The Model AGV (Annulus Gas Vent) Valve is a normally closed valve which is opened by the application
of control line pressure (1500 psi plus shut-in pressure) and has a rated working pressure of 2500 psi. Control
chamber test pressure is 10,000 psi. Fail-safe setting depth is 1600 ft with hydraulic fluid in the control line.
The AGV differs from the VR in that the AGV major OD is smaller than the VR for limited drift
applications.

MODEL AVLDM ANNULAR SAFETY VALVE

Product No. 734-94
The Model AVLDM is a tubing retrievable, surface controlled, subsurface annular
safety valve. The surface control is via a small diameter control line connecting the
safety valve to the emergency shut-down system. Since the valve is of the normally
closed type, the valve automatically returns to the closed (fail-safe) position, thus
shutting in the annulus.
The Model AVLDM Annular Safety Valve, when used in conjunction with the

Model FLX Pack-Off Tubing Hanger, provides a secondary barrier to annular flow
and a means to control the flow of fluids from the lower annulus to the upper annulus
or dedicated injection line. Primary applications include gas lift installations and wells
where pressurization of the upper casing annulus as a result of a downhole leak is not
permissible.
