Homework set 3
(20 pts)
Chapter 7
Due date: Wednesday, September 20th, in class

1- (2 pts) Estimate the thickness of the ionic atmosphere for solutions of

0.01 M and 0.1 M KCl in water at 25.0 oC with = 78. Rationalize the
effect of concentration on this thickness.

2- (2 pts) Use Table 7.3 to calculate the limiting molar conductivity of all
salts given in Table 2.

3- (4 pts) a- Use the following graph to calculate Kohlrauschs constant for

KCL.
b- Use equations 7.53, 7.54 and 7.55 to evaluate its value theoretically.
c- Comment on the validity of Debye-Huckel- Onsager equation

4- (3 pt) Calculate the ionic strength for 0.2 M solutions of Na2SO4, MgSO4,
and Ca3(PO4)2
5- (2 pts) How far can the conductivity of water at 25 C be lowered in
2 1
theory by removing impurities? The (in S cm mol ) for KOH, HCl,
14
and KCl are, respectively, 274.4, 426.04, and 149.86. Kw = 1.008 10 .
8 1
Compare your answer to the experimental value of 5.8 10 S cm .

6- (4 pts) A solution of KCl was electrolyzed in a Hittorf cell. After a

current of 0.9 A has been passed for 1.75 h, the mass of KCl in the anode
compartment decreased by 2.05 g. Calculate:
a- t+ for potassium ion and t- for chloride ion

b- If m for the above KCl solution is 111.2 S cm2mol-1, calculate the

molar ionic conductivity and the ionic mobility for potassium and
chloride ions at this concentration.

7- (3 pts) A solution of a strong electrolyte MgS was electrolyzed in a

Hittorf apparatus. A current of 0.160 amp was passed for 9650 s. the
electrode reactions are:
2+
Mg Mg + 2e
2+
and Mg + 2e Mg
The solution was initially 0.100 molal in MgS. After completion of
the electrolysis, it was found that the solution in the anode
compartment contained 100.0 g H2O and 0.0165 mole MgS. Find the
+2
transference number of Mg and S-2 in the solution.
