Q.1) Who invented the jet engine? Which country was the first to make a jet engine powered
aircraft?
Q.2) What do you understand by dirigibles? How were they used in First World War and by whom?
Q.3) Mention one relative advantage and disadvantage of hydrogen balloon compared to hot air
balloons.
Q.4) Who constructed the first human carrying glider? What was its speciality?
Q.5) Who invented box kite? What is the basic difference between a manned kite and glilder?
Q.6) What was wing warping used for? Which technique was later used in place of it?
Q.7) When and by which country was an airplane first used for military purpose?
Q.8) What is the difference between ballistic and cruise missiles? Which were the first ballistic and
cruise missiles respectively?
Q.9) Which was Indias first satellite? Which was first Indian satellite to be put into orbit by Indian-
made launch vehicle?
Q.10) What is meant by empennage? What is canard configuration?
Q.11) What is the main difference between a helicopter and gyrocopter?
Q.12) What is the use and working principle of VSI?

Answer any one question. Each question carries 5 marks.

Q.13) Suppose the pressure in a planets atmosphere is decreasing linearly with geopotential
altitude. Calculate the temperature ratio, when the pressure has fallen to half its value at the
surface.
Q.14) Assume that acceleration due to gravity on a hypothetical planet decreases exponentially with
altitude as given by the relation g=g0e-kz. Derive an expression for geopotential altitude as a
function of geometric altitude.
Q.15) Calculate the mean aerodynamic chord of a trapezoidal wing having a taper ratio and
geometric mean chord c.
