Estimating Table

This document provides application rates and unit weights for various road construction materials used for estimating purposes. It lists materials like aggregate base, hot asphalt mix, asphalt binder, antistrip, prime coat, blotter, tack coat, fog seal and concrete. Application rates are provided in metric and imperial units for each material. Notes specify assumptions for estimating prime coat, tack coat and fog seal application rates and unit weights for asphalt emulsion products.

Application Rates and Weights for Estimating Purposes

Material Application Rate or Unit Weight
Aggregate Base 2225 kg/m3 (139.0 lb/ft3)
Hot Asphalt Mix 2325 kg/m3 (145.2 lb/ft3)
Asphalt Binder 6.0% by weight of mix
Antistrip 1.0% by weight of mix
Prime Coat 0.90 to 2.25 l/m2 (0.10 to 0.50 gal/yd2)
(Using Asphalt Cutbacks) assume 1.50 l/m2 (0.33 gal/yd2) for estimating
Prime Coat 0.30 to 1.20 l/m2 (0.10 to 0.40 gal/yd2)
(Using Asphalt Emulsion*) assume 1.20 l/m2 (0.27 gal/yd2) for estimating
Prime Coat 1047 l/t (251 gal/ton)
(Using Asphalt Cutbacks)
Blotter 8.0 kg/m2 (14.75 lb/yd2)
(specified in conjunction with prime coat)
Tack Coat 0.25 to 0.70 l/m2 (0.05 to 0.15 gal/yd2)
(Using Asphalt Emulsion*) assume 0.45 l/m2 (0.10 gal/yd2) for estimating
Fog Seal 0.25 to 0.70 l/m2 (0.05 to 0.15 gal/yd2)
(Using Asphalt Emulsion*) assume 0.45 l/m2 (0.10 gal/yd2) for estimating
Fog, Tack, and Prime Coats 993 l/t (233 gal/ton)
(Using Asphalt Emulsion*)
Concrete 2485 kg/m3 (155.0 lb/ft3)
0.30 l/m2 (0.20 gal/yd2) per application
Magnesium Chloride specific gravity of 1.3
Requires 2 applications
* If the project uses the FP-03 calculate quantity based on area and use this
value in your estimate because the FP-03 pays for the water to dilute.
