Serial Number Search

1. The vertical navigation bar on the Welcome to TMI screen is very important. To initiate data
searches, you must select Engine/Parts Data. The next set of screens will help you to
understand the navigation and functionality process. The examples used in this training reflects
what you will find when accessing Engine/Parts Data.
Click the Engines/Parts Data button.

2. Most of the TMI data can be found on this screen.

In order to retrieve data, a Reference Number needs to be entered.

3. In this lesson, we will search for a Serial Number.

In using the TMI application, you can use upper/lower case letters.
Enter the desired information into the Reference Number field. Enter a valid value e.g.
"BET03099".
4. Next, you need to specify what the Reference Number Type is from the drop down list
provided.
Click the Serial Number list item.

5. In order to retrieve the maximum number of Information Tabs, reference the information
below on the different retrieval methods.

Retrieve Data - is mainly used when you are looking for data for a specific reference number
(Part number, Flash file, Performance number, Serial number, Feature code, etc.) Retrieve
Data will bring back data just for that number.

Retrieve Cross Reference - works much like Retrieve Data but it will bring back data for
other reference numbers that are tied to the one you entered. For instance, if you entered a
Feature Number of 512DE22, Retrieve Cross Reference will show you a list of other reference
numbers and other types of data that is tied to the feature code.

Advanced Search - is used when you do not have a reference number. For example, if you
just enter 500 in the HP field and submit for all ratings, then a listing will become available
showing all reference numbers that are tied to that HP.

If you were to Submit for current ratings then only current price list reference numbers would
be available.
6. You may want to refer to the buttons in the upper right-hand corner of the screen throughout
navigation in TMI.

Help - You may receive help on each of the different tabs that shows up after entering a
Reference number. Depending on the Reference number entered and Category, several
different tabs are displayed at the top of the screen, each containing information about the
item. The different categories on the left each contain a description of the information that gets
displayed once a tab has been clicked.

Home - Will take you back to the TMI Home page

7. You are now ready to retrieve the desired data for Serial Number BET03099.
Click the Retrieve Data button.

8. If your data has been found and loaded, a list of information tabs will appear.

Within the TAB's you will have the following functionality:

- Change the change levels of the data

- Change the serial number breaks of the Test Specs
- Breakdown items to lower levels
- Copy and paste into other programs

If no reference numbers are available, use Advanced Search, which enables you to access the
same TMI Data by Eng App., Rating Appl., Rating Type, Sales Model, Fuel Type, and other
selection fields.
9. If you have a support question, you can refer to For Help Desk Phone Numbers.

10. This page contains important contact information for Parts Questions (Morton Technical
Support), Service Product Health Questions (Dealer Solutions Network), Sales Support
Questions (Application Support Center), TMI Web Questions (TMI Support Center), Engine
Software Support, Customer Communications Module (CCM), ECM Hotline,
ISO/Zenithi/Eaton Support, Media Logistics/Media Search, SIS/ET/STW
Support, Olympian Genset Support, and OEM 3000 Series Call Center.
11. You are now ready to click on the tabs you would like to view for more information.

Remember, you can get definitions of the tab names by clicking on the Help button.
Click the Engine Test button.

12. The Engine Test tab is available whenever a Serial Number is used. Engine Test data pertains
to data of the exact serial number that was entered. Data displayed is Sales Model, Built Date,
Test Date, Plant, Shipped Date, Test Number and Cell Number.

"R" indicates the power and torque have been reset to nominal based on fuel rate. The screen
compares the actual test to the desired test specifications.

After viewing Engine Test, you can select another tab.

Click the Machine Test button.

13. The Machine Test tab provides data from the machine test cells. Currently data is only
available for the Track Type Tractors and Wheel Loaders.

After viewing Machine Test data, you can select another tab.
Click the As Shipped button.

14. The As Shipped consist shows the product configuration as shipped from the factory with the
Build Date. The inquiry will include all engines from 1984 onward. The Sales Model, Invoice
Number and Shipping Order Number are displayed for non captive engines.

The Reference Number column shows the reference number. The Eng Chg shows the
engineering change level of the reference number when the engine was built. Change levels
affect the part consist of a reference number. Description names the Model title.

Further break down can be viewed by selecting the BreakDown button. The break down will
show the engine as it was shipped (change levels and parts).
15. For As Shipped parts information, you can click on BreakDown button.
Click the BreakDown button.

16. As you can see, you can continue to break down Reference Number 1W8341 for further
information.
Click the BreakDown button.

17. The As Shipped Breakdown shows the Reference Number and Description for Part
Number 1W8341. You can stop here or continue to break down for more information.
18. You are now ready to view the Flash File tab.
Click the Flash File button.

19. The Flash File tab is available when a serial number or a flash file number has been entered in
the Reference Number field.

Data available is the Flash File number and Description (reason for creation).

The most current available Flash File is highlighted in BLUE and is available to download.
The download accesses the SIS system to retrieve the Flash File information.

The screen also shows the Flash File progression

Click the Flash File number button.

20. This page provides instructions on how to Download.

21. If you get a notification screen as shown, please see instructions for assistance in getting a
Service Information System (SIS user account).

The Service Information System is used for service and parts information.
22. Next, you can click on the InterLock Code Details for more information.
Click the Details button.

23. Here is the Interlock Code Details for Part Number 2413796.

Click the X button to close.

24. You are now ready to view the Physical Data tab.
Click the Physical Data button.

25. The Physical Data tab is available whenever a serial number or part number is entered in the
Reference Number field

The data available is the Reference Number, Description and additional break down
information.

Selecting BreakDown will break down the Reference Number and show the physical
characteristics.

Note: Change Level can be changed from this screen if another change level is desired.
Click the BreakDown button.

26. Here is the BreakDown Information for Group Number 7W2206.

Click the X button to close.

27. You are now ready to view the Gasket Kit.

Click the Gasket Kit button.

28. The Gasket Kit tab will appear whenever an engine serial number has been entered and
Gasket Kit data is available.

The data available is Gasket Kit description, Gasket Kit Number, Service Indicator (shows if it
is currently available or discontinued).

Selecting BreakDown enables you to break down the Gasket Kit to its' consist.
Click the Test Spec button.

29. The Test Spec tab is available whenever Serial Number, Test Spec, Retrieve XRef or
Advanced Search is used.

The Test Spec screen basically shows all data pertaining to the Test Spec.

Note: The Effective Serial Number can be changed from this screen by typing in a new Serial
Number in the Effective Serial Number area and selecting Refresh.
Click the Component Data button.

30. The Component Data tab will appear whenever any of the following types of data can be
found about the reference number you entered. For more information, select Fetch.

Types of Data:

Gov Cntl Shaft Rotate, Gov Cntl Shaft Torque, Aux Pump Perf Data, Fan Perf Data, Jacket
Water Pump Perf Data, Heat Exchgr (Oil/Water), Rad Core Air Rest Data, Exh Sil Rest Data,
Engine Friction Data, Eng Rear Side Ld Data, Start Mtr Crank Data, and Eng Front Side LD
Data.
Click the Fetch button.

31. Here you will find more detailed information about the Water Jacket in reference to Serial
Number BET03099.
Click the Fetch button.

32. As you can see the more you Fetch, the more detailed information you will receive.

Now, you can return to the previous screen.

Click the Back one screen button.

33. Click the Back one screen button.

34. Let's move on to the Spec Xref.

Click the Spec Xref button.

35. Under the Spec Xref tab you will find the following information.

- Arrangement Numbers (part numbers) that are tied to the Test Spec
- Serial Number Prefixes and Test Specs that go with the Sales Model.

Next, we will click on Spec Finder for more information.

Click the Spec Finder button.

36. Rerate Finder shows all Serial Prefixes, Test Specs, and other information that go with the
Sales Model.

You can also update that information and Submit Query.

37. We are now ready to view the Torsional Vib tab.

Click the Torsional Vib button.

38. To assure the compatibility of an engine and the drive equipment, a theoretical Torsional
Vibration analysis is necessary. Disregarding the torsional vibration compatibility of the
engine and driven equipment can result in extensive and costly damage to the components of
the set.

Conducted at the design stage of the product, the mathematically torsional vibration analysis
may reveal torsional vibration problems, which can be avoided by modification of driven
equipment shafts, masses or couplings.

Since compatibility of the installation is the customers responsibility, it is also their

responsibility to obtain the theoretical torsional vibration analysis. Data mass elastic systems
of items furnished by Caterpillar are available in this section/screen.
Click the Emissions Data button.

39. Under the Emissions Data tab you will find Engine Emissions Data of the engine.

For more information, you can click on the Emissions Definitions link.
Click the Emissions Definitions button.

40. Click the OK button.
