This physical magic presentation demonstrates how to create a "powder lava" using common household ingredients. The objectives are to simulate lava using sugar, baking soda, and alcohol. When a flame is applied to the mountain-shaped mixture, an intumescent reaction occurs where the substances expand and decrease in density, resembling flowing lava. The key physical science concept behind this is that the alcohol is flammable and the sugar and baking soda expand their molecules when heated, creating the lava-like effect. Safety gear is required due to the use of fire.
