Assignment - 9 (Solution Key)

1) The beam ABC is simply supported at A and held by a steel wire at B with an axial rigidity of 1335 kN. A load of 1 kN acts at the free end C. 2) The boundary value problem is set up and the fourth order differential equation for the beam deflection is derived. 3) The deflection equation is determined, satisfying the boundary conditions of zero deflection at A and the calculated deflection at B due to the axial wire load. 4) The deflection at the free end C, δC, is calculated as -5.069 mm.

Assignment -9 (Solution Key)
Max Marks: 10 Duration: 50 mins 26th November, 2013

Q1. A steel beam ABC is simply supported at A and held by a steel wire at B as shown in Fig. A
load P = 1 kN acts at the free end C. The wire has axial rigidity EA = 1335 kN, and beam has
flexural rigidity EI = 86 kN-m2.
a) State the proper boundary conditions and starting from the fourth-order differential
equation (i.e. the load equation), derive the equation of deflection curve.
b) Determine the deflection of point C ( C ) due to the load P.

Solution:
Force and moment balance of beam ABC gives
