This document discusses tests of independence, which test whether there is an association between row and column variables in a contingency table. It defines the chi-squared test statistic used and notes that the degrees of freedom is calculated as (number of rows - 1) * (number of columns - 1). As an example, it shows a test with 5 rows and 2 columns would have 5 degrees of freedom, and compares a computed test statistic to the critical value to determine whether to accept or reject the null hypothesis of no association.

Test of independence tests the null hypothesis that there is no association between the

row variable and the column variable. (Mas ok kung papaltan ng word na association
ung relation sa objectives nyo).

Test statistic for a test of independence

The degrees of freedom is r 1 c 1 .

Objective 4
degrees of freedom is 5 1 2 1 5 , at 0.05 , critical value is 11.071
the computed value is 1.211 which is lower than the critical value, thus, the null
hypothesis that there is no association between grammar proficiency and elementary
school background is accepted. (Grammar proficiency and elementary school background
are independent)
