At the end of this lesson students will have the knowledge General Rescuer
skills ability to perform skills in a controlled environment BLOCK 1
without the aid of a coach
Learning Outcome:
At the end of this lesson the rope rescue candidate will understand key components,
construct operate and belay a falling load with a traditional top belay system in a high
angle environment
Lesson Objectives:
1. Given various edge protection devices a student shall select the appropriate edge
protection for the system constructed and place it in a manner to protect the rope
(NFPA 1006 5.5.3b)
2. Given an equipment cache the candidate shall construct a traditional top belay
using a Petzl IDL (NFPA 1006 5.5.9b)
3. Given an equipment cache the candidate shall construct a traditional top belay
using a tandem prussic belay (NFPA 1006 5.5.9b)
4. Given equipment cache the candidate shall construct a fixed rope system (recon)
using a Petzl IDL (NFPA 1006 6.1.5b)
5. Given an assembled fixed rope and traditional top belay system (IDL) the
candidate shall operate the belay system while a rescuer descends the fixed rope
system (NFPA 1006 5.5.10b)

6. Given an assembled fixed rope and traditional top belay system a student shall
operate the tandem prussic belay system (NFPA 1006 5.5.10b)
7. Given an assembled fixed rope system (recon) a student shall descend a fixed
rope system (recon) using a Petzl IDL (NFPA 1006 6.1.8b)
8. Given an assembled fixed rope system (recon) a student shall ascend (self-
rescue) a fixed rope system a total distance of 3 meters (10) (NFPA 1006 6.1.7b)
9. Given an assembled system including anchor, belay and mainline a student shall
conduct a system safety check (NFPA 1006 5.5.12b)
10. Given a high angle environment, a crew of rescuers and a training belay kit the
rope rescue candidate shall belay a falling load with a Petzl ID L belay system
(NFPA 1006 5.5.11b)
11. Given a high angle environment, a crew of rescuers and a training belay kit the
rope rescue candidate shall belay a falling load with a tandem prussik belay
system (NFPA 1006 5.5.11b)

Review techniques to pass knots and ascend a fixed
system

Demonstrate and perform a system safety check
Lesson Outline (Practical Skills):
1. Using an equipment cache, construct and operate a
traditional top belay using an IDL
2. Using an equipment cache, construct and operate a
traditional top belay using a tandem prussic belay
3. Using an equipment cache, construct and descend a
fixed rope using a Petzl IDL
4. Using only the personal kit provided to a rescuer,
ascend a fixed rope 3m (10)
5. Using only the personal kit provided to a rescuer,
pass a knot in the fixed rope system
6. Acting as a safety officer, perform a complete system
safety check (verbal, visual and tactile)
7. Belay a falling load TRAINING TOWER ONLY
