HERD RECORDING MADE EASY!!

1. Read the Herd Book and the Year book to get your head around what to do

24 hour test ..(does that meet the requirement can get a *, Q* or a *Q*)
Herd recording. A number of 24 hr tests are undertaken over the lactation up to 365
days

2. Contact Geoff Potts at Dairy Express for all the paperwork required (ad in Year book with phone
numbers) get registered and they will send you

(i) test sample bottles


(ii) courier slip to attach to your parcel (Toll Priority)
(iii) slip that goes in the box with the samples

(iv) paperwork to fill out (2 booklets)

3. Work out which does you want to Herd rec. and fill out the paperwork

4. The paperwork for Dairy Express:


(a) Pedigree Sheets once a doe is registered she is registered for life ie you do not have to
register her every year.
(b) Event Sheets needs to be filled out when she kids, gets sold, dies, is dried off

Have the registration certificates handy as you will need the details of the does to do this
We will do an example together (photocopied sheet from each booklet plus a certificate of a
doe)

5. You are now ready to do your first 24 hour test the beginning of your herd recording!
You need to organise a Branch approved person to be with you at:
Strip out time recorded (please leave 10 minutes between each strip out)
First recording
Second recording (24 hours after the strip out)

6. Fill out the official NSW Branch milk recording sheet - a suggestion?? Photocopy the sheet/s so
that you dont have to continually fill out the sheets each recording

We will do fill out a sheet together

7. Ready to do the 24 hour test!!


Equipment needed
Milk recording sheet for DGSA and Dairy express Production Recording Sheet
Syringe for milk sampling
Scales in 0.05 increments
2 buckets 1 for milking and for 1for putting the milk bucket into it
Test bottles
Marker pen
