Project Biomaterials

This document summarizes a group project on designing a remote-controlled drug delivery device for glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), an aggressive brain cancer. The existing treatment of solid drug pallets has problems of slowing dissolution rates and lack of control. The group's design is based on a remote-controlled microdevice that can deliver drugs to the brain. Their device has separate input channels for the drug and medium that are further divided and remotely controlled to mix solutions at varying concentrations and control drug flow for GBM patients.

Glioblastoma Multiforme
Glioblastoma multiform is common most aggressive type brain cancer which occur generally
after 64 years of age and average survival period on medication is 13 to 16 months otherwise 3
months. There is neither proper symptoms and signs for prediction nor clear way to cure it.

Generally patient have to go through brain surgery for removal of tumor after which anti-tumor
drug ( temozolomide) pallets are put in the void for chemotherapy along with radiation radiation
therapy which substantially increase the lifetime of patient.

Problems with existing method

It uses solid pallets which dissolves at approx. constant rate in brain.
The dissolving rate slows down with time.
We dont have control over the dissolving rate as per requirement which may change
with time and situation.

Our idea
Recently (in July 2015) , a remote control device has been formed by a team of
researcher of Washington University in St. Louis. This device can deliver drug to the
brain and it can be controlled via a remote control. The size of this device is about the
width of human hair.[1]
We used this device in our design. This helps in controlling the flow and the
concentration of the drug delivered via our device.
As it can be remotely controlled, a simple computer program can also be written to
control it automatically.

Our Device Design -

This Device consist of two input sites. One with solution A (Drug) and other with Solution B
(medium) to transmit the drug. Each input channel is subdivided into two channels which is
controlled by remotely control device. Now these two channels are further divided into two more
channels which are again controlled by a remote control device. We did this to avoid extra
leakage of drug during the mixing of desired concentration.
Lets assume that we need the concentration of 80% of solution, then we can allow all the four
channel of solution A and only one channel of solution B. The output channel will contain the
drug 80% concentration of the solution. Similarly a different concentration can be achieved by
controlling the different channel of the respective solution via a remote control device.

Conclusion

As stated above our device will be able to control and regulate the concentration of the
drug via a remote control device. Assuming that the remote control device works
perfectly as stated our device will be able to control the drug flow.
