Sqqs1013 Elementary Statistics SECOND SEMESTER SESSION 2014/2015 (A142) Group Assignment 1

The document is a group assignment for an elementary statistics course. It contains instructions for students to plan a descriptive statistical study by choosing a subject of interest and identifying at least four variables to analyze. The group chose to study the relationship between breakfast consumption and student mark scales in Nationhood Studies. They collected data on 30 student mark scales, which were symmetrically distributed with most values between 60-69 and no outliers. Calculations of mean, median and mode were around 69, indicating average student marks.

Question 2.
a. In your team, plan a descriptive statistical study and choose the subject of interest. The
chosen subject and variables must not be similar to other teams.
Example
Subject: A sachet of 3 in 1 coffee
Variables: Weight (gram); Total fat (Kcal/100gm); Sugar (%); Brand (X)

(i) State the purpose and the subject of your study.

To study the relationship between breakfasts consumption with students mark scale of
Nationhood Studies.

(ii) Identify at least FOUR (4) variables of interest about the subject. For each variable, identify
the type and its level of measurement. The chosen variables shall include all FOUR (4) levels of
measurement (N, O, I, R).

Level of Data Variable Example

measurement

Nominal Qualitative Type of breakfast Apple

Muffin

Ordinal Qualitative Grade classification First class

Second class

Infernal Quantitative Temperature of Celsius

Ratio Quantitative Mark scale 90 100

b. From part (a), choose a quantitative variable, and find at least 30 observations (regardless the
sampling method). Collect and record the data. The chosen variable must not be similar to other
teams.

(i) State your chosen variable and explain how you collected the data

Ratio: Mark scale of Nationhood Studies.

We collect the data by face to face.

(ii) Provide a complete listing of the collected data.

61 78 47 79 66

65 70 52 79 68

65 76 61 67 76

86 67 75 69 77

(iii) Draw a stem-and-leaf diagram or histogram or box-plot to present your data.

(iv) Refer to your answer in part (iii) and comment on the shape of the distribution. Is there any
extreme value (outlier) in your data?

It is show that shape of the distribution is symmetric this is because its right half is a mirror image
of its left half. Yes, the extreme value is 60 69.

(v)Calculate a suitable central tendency measure, justify why it is suitable and interpret the value.

No of classes (c) = 1 + 3.3 log 30

Measure of dispersion

(vii) Write at least TWO (2) sentences to summarize the findings from your study.

It shows that whether students have taking the breakfast or not the result of the Nationhood Studies
by students are average. It means that breakfast has no effect on the mark scale.
