Achieving Structural Fire Safety Using Deemed-to-Satisfy Provisions

This document summarizes an upcoming seminar on achieving structural fire safety using deemed-to-satisfy provisions in the Building Code of Australia. The seminar will focus on means of compliance with deemed-to-satisfy provisions and provide a summary of fire resistance level requirements and methods for achieving them for steel and composite steel-concrete members. It will also describe two recent fire design notes on plasterboard fire walls penetrated by steel members and cases where bare steel members can provide economical, code-compliant designs. The seminar details of date, time, location, registration information and speakers are also provided.

Achieving Structural Fire Safety

Using Deemed-to-Satisfy Provisions

The easiest pathway to achieving compliance with the structural fire resistance requirements of the Building Code of Australia (BCA)
is to use the Deemed-to-Satisfy (DTS) provisions. This seminar will focus on means of compliance with DTS.
A summary will be given of the main BCA requirements for Fire-Resistance Levels (FRL) and the available means of achieving any FRL
for steel members and composite steel/concrete members.
Two Fire Design Notes recently published by OneSteel and Victoria University will also be described in detail, as follows:
t Fire Design Note No. 4 describes work done on plasterboard fire walls penetrated by steel members. This work includes furnace
fire tests and design recommendations.
t Fire Design Note No. 5 provides guidance in relation to several cases of DTS-compliant design where economical solutions can
be achieved using bare steel members.

Ian R Thomas
Professor Thomas is Director of the Centre for Environmental Safety and Risk Engineering (CESARE) at Victoria University, Melbourne,
Australia. In this role he is responsible for wide ranging research on fire safety in buildings and on risk management.
He graduated in 1972 from Monash University with a PhD in structural engineering. He worked for seven years doing steelwork
design and undertaking the development of steel building systems and methods of design. From 1979 until 1999 he was with
BHP Melbourne Research Laboratories, where as Engineering Research Manager he was responsible for projects dealing with the
behaviour of structures in fire and applications of mechanical and structural engineering to a wide range of applications.
Professor Thomas is a pioneer in the development of fire safety practice including numerous contributions to both the prescriptive
approach and the performance-based fire safety engineering approach. He is a recipient of the Chapman Medal from the Institution
of Engineers Australia and the Jack Bono Engineering Communications Award from the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (USA).
