Minor Test 1::: MTL 101::: February 2017

This document provides instructions for a minor test in linear algebra. It lists 5 questions, with the first asking to find bases for subspaces, the second finding a condition for linear dependence, the third dealing with vector spaces of functions, the fourth proving or disproving statements, and the fifth listing possible rank 2 matrices. Candidates are instructed to show their work and arguments for full marks, and not waste time on unrelated content. The test is out of 20 marks over 1 hour.

Minor Test 1 ::: MTL 101 ::: February 2017

Every question is compulsory.

Marks will not be awarded if appropriate arguments are not provided.
Do not waste time describing what is not asked.

Maximum Marks: 20 Maximum Time: 1 hour

(1) (a) Find a basis for W1 W2 , where [3]

W1 = {(x, y, z, w) R : x y + z w = 0, 5x 4y + 3z 2w = 0}
W2 = {(x, y, z, w) R4 : x 2y + 3z 4w = 0, x 2y + 2z w = 0}.

(b) Find a basis for span(S), where [2]

S = {(x, y, z) R3 : 3x + 2y + z = 2, x + y + z = 1}.

(2) Find a condition on , , , so that

{(0, 1, 0, 1), (1, 0, 1, 0), (2, 1, 1, 1), (, , , )}
is a linearly dependent set in R4 . [3]

(3) Let V be the vector space over the field R of all real-valued functions on R.
(a) Let Sa = {sin 2x, sin ax}, a R. Find all a such that Sa is linearly independent. [2]
(b) Let B = {e3x , cos 2x, sin 2x} and W = span(B). Let f (x) = e3x + sin 2x cos 2x.

(a) Let X and Y be nonempty subsets of a vector space V . Then
span(X) span(Y ) = span(X Y ).

(b) If {u, v, w} is linearly independent, then {u3v, 3v w, wu} is linearly independent.
