The system uses a large-capacity and high-speed serial bus backplane to connect the main
control board to all service line cards. The control and switch matrices supporting 1:1
redundancy are combined in one, A large-capacity switch matrix is used to guarantee the
switching capacity that the system may need when it is operating at wire speed. The control
board uses a high-performance CPU and large memory to ensure adequate storage space for
speedy protocol processing and huge table contents. Each line card provides packet processing
capability at wire speed through ASIC and offers 10G, 1Gand 100Minterfaces according to
different service.

For software, the operating system ROS is a multi-task, real-time operating system which is the
core for software architecture of the routing switch.  It is responsible to manage the hardware
architecture of the entire routing switch, providing a uniform operation platform for the
applications of the software system. Based on the VxWorks kernel, single-processor based
process scheduling, process synchronization, memory management, and timing management
shall be implemented. Kernel functions such as communications between processes of the same
CPU and between processes of multi-processor shall also be provided for reliable, efficient and

ZXR10 8900 Boosts Broadband Network
Construction
2009-06-12

With the development of network technologies, people’s lives, work and entertainment are
increasingly related to the network. “IP Everywhere” and “Everything over IP” have become the
trends in the telecom industry, and accelerating broadband network construction has become the
goal of governments and people in different countries. On February 3, 2009, the German
government and the German telecom industry have agreed to cooperate on broadband expansion;
on April 9, 2009, the Australian government announced it would build a national broadband
network for up to 43 billion Australian dollars; on April 8, 2009, the US Federal
Communications Commission (FCC) unanimously approved a measure to develop a “national
broadband plan”, and about US$7.2 billion has been allocated for this plan.

With the widespread use of applications such as high-speed Internet access, high definition video
and Internet gaming, telecom products will become competitive only if they can provide high
integration, high bandwidth and carrier-class reliability, and be cost-effective, manageable and
operable.

As Ethernet technology offers such advantages as good bandwidth expandability, high-speed

seamless scalability of transmission rates (from 10Mbps, 100Mbps, 1000Mbps, to 10G and
100G), low cost per bit and plug-and-play, it is playing an increasingly important role in the
broadband network construction.

With a clear understanding of customer demands, ZTE launched G-series switch in 2005,
including T160G, T64G and T40G. Compared with traditional Ethernet switches, these switches
are reliable and manageable and support features such as MPLS, dynamic routing and Ethernet
OAM, so they are really carrier-class Ethernet switches. To adapt to market changes, ZTE
divided the G-series switch into two models in 2008: 6900 and 8900. The 8900 series is mainly
used in telecom operator market.

So far, ZXR10 8900 series switch has taken 32% share of China’s domestic market, and ZTE is
listed by China Telecom, the largest fixed-network operator in China, as one of the top two
switch suppliers.

3
Moreover, ZXR10 8900 takes 35% share of the convergence layer products centrally purchased
in 2008 by China Netcom, another leading operator in China.

As a result of ZTE’s aggressive market exploration, ZXR10 8900 series switch has gained
increasing recognition across the global market. Some typical cases are given as below.

India’s BSNL Project

On January 23, 2007, India’s former President A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, in his speech to the
Congress, declared 2007 the Year of Broadband. In response to this call, India unveiled the
“nationwide broadband policy”. BSNL, India’s largest national telecom operator, began to
reconstruct old networks and build new broadband networks. This broadband project is a
nationwide IP MAN construction project. After this project is completed, broadband service will
be available in 800 medium and large cities in India.

BSNL adopted the IP DSLAM technology for broadband access, which requires the DSLAM
traffic to be converged before being transferred to the core network. BSNL selected T64G in the
early stage and 8905 in the capacity expansion stage. ZXR10 8900 series switch was highly
appreciated by BSNL. The operator selected more than 2,600 ZXR10 8900 switches throughout
the network construction. “ZTE is the No. 1 supplier of switches for BSNL broadband network,”
said Anup Kuman, GM of BSNL’s Procurement Department.

Australia’s Amcom Project

Based in Western Australia, Amcom has been committed to providing cost-effective Last Mile
Services since its foundation. After strict equipment tests, Amcom selected ZXR10 8900 series
switch as the core and convergence-layer devices, and deployed them in six major node cities
throughout Australia. Adopting IP over DWDM technology, Amcom’s broadband network offers

4
high bandwidth, long transmission distance, and good protection. This network received
Telecommunications Category Award at the 17th annual Western Australia Information
Technology and Telecommunications Awards (WAITTA), 2007.

Hong Kong’s PCCW Project

PCCW is the largest telecom operator in Hong Kong and a leader in information and
communication technologies in Asia. The broadband TV service of PCCW is one of the most
successful IPTV services in the world.

PCCW pays much attention to network reliability. If the network fails and cannot be quickly
recovered, the user experience will be affected. To avoid this, ZTE recommended PCCW to use
standard-based Ethernet ring network technology at the access and convergence layers to ensure
a convergence rate of less than 50 ms. However, the RFC3619-based Ethernet ring network
technology only defines a single ring, which is not suitable for the complicated network
application environment. To meet PCCW’s demands, ZXR10 8900 series is customized to
exceed the standard, based on the deep research on multi-ring, multi-domain and dual-uplink
technologies. Because of powerful customization capability and quick response, ZTE won praise
from PCCW.

The great success of ZXR10 8900 series switch can be attributed to its design, R&D, production,
and excellent performance. To cater to different market demands, ZXR10 8900 series switch is
divided into four types, which correspond to four types of service slots, 2, 5, 8 and 12, and all the
service line cards are of general use.

5
The broadband network construction involves many technologies at the access layer, such as
xDSL and FTTx. To converge numerous interfaces and traffic from the access layer (generally at
a certain convergence ratio) and reduce the core-layer device interfaces, it is necessary to deploy
high density port and high reliability devices at the convergence layer. ZXR10 8900 series
switch is very suitable for application at the convergence layer of the broadband MAN. Figure 1
shows the position of ZXR10 8900 in the network.

Moreover, ZXR10 8900 series switch can also be deployed at the convergence and core layers of
the enterprise and campus networks.

With regards to product performance, ZXR10 8900 series switch boasts excellent performance
indices and rich service functions:

■ Large capacity: The MAC address table supports 512k, so more end users can be connected.
Each slot supports 48 GE interfaces or four 10G interfaces.
■ High density: Currently, ZXR10 8900 supports 48-port GE board or 4-port 10GE board,
greatly reducing the number of devices required. The high-density design reduces the power
consumption, so it is eco-friendly.
■ Flexible configuration: The optical interface board offers self-adaptive support for 100 or
1000Mbps services. It provides different rates when different optical modules are inserted.
■ DPI and firewall: Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) can analyze L2 and L7 packets and provide
powerful service control to meet the operators’ requirements for refined operations. The built-in
firewall module greatly improves the network security.
■ Dual-stack support: ZXR10 8900 supports both IPv4 and IPv6, so it facilitates the transition to

6
IPv6 in the future, protecting the operators’ investment.
■ High reliability: ZXR10 8900 supports G.8032 ring network standard, which is primarily
developed by ZTE. G.8032 defines Ethernet ring automatic protection switching. This standard
has been approved by ITU SG15. The ring network protection technology of ZXR10 8900 can
provide similar protection capabilities as the SDH network and meet the application
requirements in various complicated environments.

Since its launch in 2005, ZXR10 8900 series switch has won favor from both home and abroad.
In 2007 and 2008, the shipments of ZXR10 8900 series switch reached about 10,000.

Many commercial applications at home and abroad have proved that the ZXR10 8900 series
switch has excellent performance, rich functions, high reliability, and high cost-performance
ratio, making it completely suitable for the MAN construction.
