Ideas and options in English Specific Purposes is the most recent addition to
the ESL & applied linguistics professional series (Eli Hinkel). In this article Dudley-
Evans and St John (1998), identifies an important gap in the ESP literature-the lack of
coherent and principled discussion of the theories and ideas that influence ESP
practices. In ESP identify process is very important in order to teaching process
running well. This is have big influence in ESP. Because of that the teacher must pay
attention with this.

In this article, we can see the author explain about limited discussion on two
fronts. There are: the first one is connecting methodologies to theories of learning and
language acquisition. The second one is exploring the objectives of ESP teaching.
This case maybe the teacher must choose the material that related with language
acquisition. This is useful to avoid misunderstanding between the material and
students need. Here, we can know that in ESP material, language acquisition, the
purpose is very important to pay attention by the teacher.

In this article also explain about three main sections. The first one is
preliminaries. In this case, we can start with making outlining the aims and intended
audience-graduate students and practicing ESP teacher. Then, the teacher goes on
from explorer some of the social and political implications. After that, the teacher can
be introduces the key elements of the approach to examine ESP. Finally, opposing
perspectives on four different issues in ESP course design are introduced.

The second one is ideas and options. Here, there are three basic themes that
will explain one by one. The first theme is concepts. The teacher must focus on
concept that will teach to the students, but the teacher of course should be related
with the students purpose. The second theme is research. The teacher must review
about considers the most relevan studies that address particular topic that will
discussed in ESP teaching.

And the last theme is applications. The teacher must give specific example
about theory or research to be practice with the students. Then, the teacher give
examines ESP that focuses on grammatical structure, vocabulary and discourse
structures. Here, the teacher should be use language in ESP context and how the
teacher use social interaction with their students in ESP class. In the last activity, the
teacher can give evaluation to their students.
