biological activity
Although the use of veronica has not obtained official approval for any type of therapeutic
application, in this plant properties are attributed anti-inflammatory due to iridoid glycosides in
it.
In addition, the plant will also be ascribed astringent properties and it is believed that it can
promote healing of ulcers.
A relatively recent study (2012) - conducted in vitro on cell lines of lung human - has shown that
the veronica extract is actually able to exert anti-inflammatory action, through a mechanism that
involves the inhibition of cyclooxygenase type 2 (or COX-2), ie the enzyme deputy to the
synthesis of prostaglandins responsible for inflammatory processes . However, despite the
results obtained in vitro, in vivo studies are certainly needed depth to determine what are the
real therapeutic effectiveness and the actual use of the plant safety.
Another study conducted in vitro, however, has highlighted the antioxidant and antimicrobial
properties of the veronica. These activities appear to be exerted mainly by flavonoids and
phenolic acids in the plant. More specifically, the study showed that the antibacterial activity of
veronica is particularly effective against strains of Staphylococcus aureus , of Listeria
monocytogenes and Listeria ivanovii.
In folk medicine veronica is used internally for the treatment of disorders of different origin and
