Control System 1st Mid Term Paper July Dec 2015

1. The document provides model answers for control system questions covering topics like closed vs open loop systems, transfer functions, signal flow graphs, block diagram reduction, root locus analysis, and Mason's gain formula. 2. Guidelines are given for sketching root locus plots including determining poles, zeros, asymptotes, breakaway points, and stability. 3. Mason's gain formula is explained as an alternative to block diagram reduction for calculating overall gain, with the advantage of not requiring reduction of the signal flow graph.

Model Answers CONTROL SYSTEM EC-502 Midterm-I July-Dec 2015-16

Question 1.
a) Differentiate between closed loop and open loop system.
S.No Open Loop System. Closed Loop System.
1. Inaccurate and unreliable. Accurate and reliable.
2. Consumes less power. Consumes much power.
3. Simple and economical Complex and Costlier.
4. The change in output due to The change in output due to
external disturbance are not external disturbances is
corrected automatically corrected automatically.
5. They are generally stable Efforts are needed to design a
stable system.

b) Define transfer function and characteristic equation.

Transfer Function:

Characteristic Equation:
c) Represent the following set of equation by signal flow graph and
determine the overall gain relating x5 and x1.
X2= ax1+fx2
X3=bx2+ex4
X4=cx3+hx5
X5=dx4+gx2

d) Obtain transfer function C(s)/R(s) by signal flow graph.

e) Find C(s)/R(s) by using block diagram reduction.

First redraw the block diagram we get

Shifting the take-off point 1 and 2 beyond the block G1 we get

Eliminating the summing point at point 4 we get
Question 2.
a) Determine static error coefficient Kp, Kv, Ka for the given open loop
50
transfer function of unity feedback system is G(s)= (1+0.1s)(s+10)
.

b) S5+S4+2S3 +2S2+3S+5=0. Check the stability of system.

c) Write the guidelines for sketching root locus.
General steps for drawing the Root Locus of the given system:
Step 1: Determine the open loop poles, zeros and number of branches
from given G(s) H(s).
Step 2: Draw the pole zero plot and determine the region of real axis for
which the root locus exists. Also determine the number of breakaway
points (This will be explained, while solving the problems).
Step 3: Calculate angle of asymptotes.
Step 4: Determine the centroid point.
Step 5: Calculate the breakaway points (if any).
Step 6: Calculate the intersection point of root locus with imaginary
axis.
Step 7: Calculate the angle of departure or angle of arrivals if any.
Step 8: from above steps draw the overall sketch of the root locus.
Step 9: Predict the stability and performance of the given system by the
root locus.

d) A unity feedback system has an open loop transfer function G(s)

K(S+1)
= .Sketch the root locus plot with k as variable parameter and show
S(S1)

that the loci of complex root are part of circle with (-1, 0) as center and
radius equal to 2.
K
e) Sketch the root locus plot for G(s) = .
S(S+4)(S+5)
Question 3.
a) Explain Masons Gain Formulae and state its advantages over block
diagram reduction.
Masons Gain Formulae

Where,
Pk represents path gain of kth forward path.
represents determinant of the graph which is given by:
= 1- (sum of loop gains of all individual loops) + (sum of gain products
of all possible combinations of two non-touching loops) (sum of gain
products of all possible combinations of three non-touching loops) +
k represents the value of for that part of the graph which does not
touch the kth forward path.
T is the overall gain of the given control system.
Advantages
Transfer function can be easily calculated without reduction in the signal
flow graph.

b) Explain the significance of in transient response of second order

system.
The damping ratio of a second-order system, denoted with the Greek
letter zeta (), is a real number that defines the damping properties of the
system. More damping has the effect of less percent overshoot, and
slower settling time. Damping is the inherent ability of the system to
oppose the oscillatory nature of the system's transient response. Larger
the values of damping coefficient or damping factor produces transient
responses with lesser oscillatory nature.
c) If N1=40 and N2 =20, Calculate
i. Find the ratio of r1:r2
ii. If 1 is 10 rad/sec calculate 2.
iii. If torque on wheel 1 is 5Nm what will be the torque for wheel2.

d) Sketch the root locus of a unity feedback control system with the
K
following feed forward transfer function G(s) = .
S(S2 +4S+8)
e) Write the differential equation for the given mechanical system also
obtain the analogous electrical network using F-V analogy and F-I
analogy.
