V-Ray 1.5 For 3dsmax Readme: New Features

V-Ray 1.5 for 3dsmax introduces new features like motion blur on particle systems, improved color mapping modes, and adaptive path tracing. It also includes enhancements to existing tools such as the irradiance map, render elements, materials, textures, lights, and cameras. Distributed rendering and the V-Ray frame buffer see stability improvements. Some limitations remain regarding distributed rendering and cancelling renders may crash 3dsmax in rare cases.

V-Ray 1.

5 for 3dsmax readme

New features
Renderer

0 Support for motion blur on Particle Flow systems with both translational and rotational
motion blur.
1 New Reinhard color mapping mode.
2 Sub-pixel and per-pixel color mapping modes.
3 More inteligent ray sampling to reduce noise when combining multiple blurry effects (e.g.
area light illumination seen in glossy reflections etc).
4 Full floating-point output support in 3dsmax.
5 Adaptive path tracing mode can concentrate samples in important areas to reduce noise
in difficult situations.

V-Ray SDK

6 The V-Ray SDK is now bundled with V-Ray for 3dsmax.

7 Allows the implementation of V-Ray specific materials, lights, atmospheric effects,
geometric primitives, cameras etc.
8 Allows the replacement of nearly every aspect of the render engine (raycast acceleration,
GI solutions, image samplers etc).

Irradiance map

9 Detail enhancement for the irradiance map. This works similar to an integrated ambient
occlusion pass, but is more physically correct, rather than just producing a "dirty" effect.

Render elements

10 The 3dsmax Render Elements interface is now supported by V-Ray. The old G-Buffer
settings have been removed.
11 VRayMtlSelect render element allows the user to extract a given material to a separate
render element. This can be either a top-level V-Ray material, or a sub-material of
VRayBlendMtl.
12 VRayWireColor render element allows the user to create masks with specified colors.
13 Color mapping per render element. Color mapping can be turned on or off on a per-
element basis.
14 Render elements are fully supported in distributed rendering mode.

Materials

15 VRayBlendMtl material allows the layering of several different V-Ray materials. This is a
lot faster than the regular 3dsmax Blend/Shellac/Composite materials and generates
correct V-Ray render elements. The different layers of a VRayBlendMtl can be extracted to
different render elements through the VRayMtlSelect render element.
16 VRay2SidedMtl material allows the simulation of thin translucent surfaces like paper.
17 VRayFastSSS material for simulating the sub-surface scattering in materials like human
skin. Works best if layered with a regular diffuse/specular VRayMtl through VRayMtlBlend.
18 VRayOverrideMtl material allows the user to specify different materials for
reflections/refractions/GI.

Textures

19 VRayDirt texture for simulating dirt or ambient occlusion..

20 VRaySky environment texture works either with VRaySun or regular direct lights to
simulate the natural sky illumination of the Sun. For best results, use with the V-Ray
physical camera.
21 VRayCompTex texture for combining textures in additional ways not available in 3dsmax
(e.g. difference, division etc).
22 VRayColor texture for specifying precise floating-point RGB color values.

Lights

23 VRaySky light for simulating the natural illumination of the Sun. Works in conjunction with
the VRaySky texture. For best results, use with the V-Ray physical camera.

Cameras

24 VRayPhysicalCamera simulates an actual photographic camera with real-world settings.

25 VRayDomeCamera can be used to render images to be projected on hemispheric dome
screens.

Render to texture

26 V-Ray has its own texture baking elements, which must be used instead of the standard
3dsmax ones.
27 Color mapping can be applied on a per-element basis.

V-Ray frame buffer (VFB)

28 Enhanced stability, user interface improvements.

29 sRGB option for display in 2.2 gamma space.
30 Support for pixel aspect ratio different than 1.0.

MaxScript

31 Direct export of V-Ray proxy meshes from MaxScript without a GUI dialog.

Modified features
VRayLight

32 Support for IBL (image-based lighting) - VRayLight in "dome" mode can be mapped with
a HDR image with optimized importance sampling for both diffuse and specular lighting.
33 The dome light can be made spherical or hemi-spherical.
34 Accurate light emission units (lumens, watts etc). For best results, use this feature with
the V-Ray physical camera.
35 Separate "affect diffuse" and "affect specular" options.
VRayFur

36 Added mapping for many parameters - fur direction, density etc.

37 Optimized performance.

VRayToon

38 Support for including/excluding objects from the toon effect.

VRayDisplacementMod

39 Better displacement for meshes with large triangles.

Distributed rendering

40 Improved stability.
41 Render elements and G-Buffer channels are now supported in DR mode.
42 Animation is supported in DR mode.
43 Support for X-Ref'd scenes.

Known issues and limitations

Distributed rendering

44 Distributed rendering does not support rendering from cameras in x-ref scenes; the
camera must be in the base .max file.
45 "Incremental add" and "Add" modes are currently not supported in distributed rendering
mode; this will be added in an updated build.
46 Objects with HSDS modifier will cause the render slaves to crash in distributed rendering
mode.

VFB

47 The VFB is listed as a separate window in the task bar and may be hidden by the main
3dsmax window - you can bring it back from the taskbar.
48 The 3dsmax render effects (e.g. Image motion blur, Brightness and contrast etc). are not
supported in the V-Ray VFB at this time.
49 If the VFB resolution is different than the 3dsmax resolution, region, crop etc. rendering
modes will not work properly.
50 Sometimes for relatively large output resolutions, there may not be enough memory to
duplicate the V-Ray frame buffer into a 3dsmax bitmap for saving into an image file. This
can be avoided by writing directly to a .vrimg file.

Rendering

51 Very rarely cancelling a rendering with V-Ray may crash 3dsmax to the desktop. This is a
high-priority issue and will be fixed as soon as possible.

WIBU key 64-bit driver

52 The WIBU key 64-bit driver provided with V-Ray for 3dsmax 64-bit is a beta version of the
driver. This is because the official 64-bit driver available from WIBU-SYSTEMS can cause
the machine to restart or show a Windows "blue screen" error. The provided beta version of
the driver has been found to work with the V-Ray hardware USB key without causing such
errors. However this driver version is not officially supported by WIBU-SYSTEMS. When a
final version of the driver is released, it will be included with the V-Ray installation instead.
