Cylinders - Overview

There are three types of cylinders used in hydraulic applications: double-rod double-acting cylinders, single-rod double-acting cylinders, and single-rod single-acting cylinders. A hydraulic cylinder transforms fluid flow or pressure into mechanical motion or thrust. It includes a piston, rod, and references the cylinder diameter, rod diameter, and maximum stroke or travel length. The document provides figures illustrating each type and defines related terms like reference pressure and mass flow rates.

Cylinders - Overview

There are three cylinder components that can be used in hydraulic applications, namely:

l Cylinder: Double-rod Double-acting

l Cylinder: Single-rod Double-acting

l Cylinder: Single-rod Single-acting.

A hydraulic cylinder is used to transform (i) fluid flow into mechanical motion, or (ii) fluid
pressure into a thrust or pull on the piston and rod.
