Quantum Mechanics Fall 2003-Homework Set 2: Additional Problems

1) The document contains homework problems on quantum mechanics including problems on the Hamiltonian of a particle in a potential well, time evolution of states in a 3 state system, uncertainty relations, and projection operators. 2) It assigns several textbook problems from Griffiths and Cohen-Tannoudji to work through related to these concepts. 3) Problem CT 2.3 involves defining and manipulating kets in a 3D state space including normalizing kets, writing projection operators, and using them to project one ket onto another.

mechanical Hamiltonian.
(b) Calculate the time rate of change of the average position < X > and
the average momentum < P >.
(c) Write the uncertainty relation for the momentum and energy.
(d) Solve the two equations in (b) for the average trajectory of the par-

(b) If the energy of the system is measured what are the possible outcomes
for this state vector and with probabilities?

ing observables? fH g, fAg, fA; B g, fA; H g, or fH; B g. Justify.
(e) Calculate the expectation value of B as a function of time.
(f) For j (0) >, what outcomes of a measurement of B are possible and
with what probabilities?
