Course Name
Nursing 471: The Practice of Nursing V (Decker School of Nursing at Binghamton University: Traditional Baccalaureate Program)
Course Description
Practice of Nursing V is the final course of the clinical practice series and provides the student with an arena for synthesis of the
nursing education experience for the first professional degree. Health of human systems as affected by the external environment
provides the framework for the continuous focus of preventative, supportive, and restorative care.
Nursing process continues to serve as the fundamental scientific approach to nursing care, but the focus is expanded to encompass
an integrated approach to healthcare delivery. Nursing case management, with an interdisciplinary approach to client/family health
and illness, is used in both hospital-based and community-based practice settings.
The theoretical content of this course focuses on the application of theories and principles of leadership, administration,
management, quality assurance/improvement, and change process relative to nursing practice and the healthcare delivery system.
The nature of authority, accountability, and responsibility with specific application to nursing will be studied. Power will be
approached as a vital and positive force necessary for the attainment of individual and organizational goals/outcomes in the delivery
of healthcare.
The clinical laboratory will provide students with the opportunity to: apply management principles, exercise personal leadership in
the management of a caseload of clients, and evaluate the care given by themselves and others. Special emphasis will be placed on
process- and outcome-based evaluation as an important focus of leadership. Experiences in the clinical laboratory focus on the role
of the professional nurse in providing health and nursing care to individuals, families, and communities with culturally diverse
backgrounds. As part of the laboratory experience, students will use simulation to enhance clinical knowledge and skill
development, and will conduct peer teaching of specific skills.
2. Participate in the change process to influence nursing practice and healthcare system policies and practices.
3. Examine socioeconomic, cultural, and political variables that influence the availability and utilization of healthcare services.
4. Analyze a particular aspect of care in a selected healthcare setting using principles of quality management and evidence-
based practice.
5. Develop confidence in and an increased capacity for enacting professional roles as provider of care, designer/manager of
care, and member of a profession.
