Work Method Statement For Cable Excavation Trenches
1) Even though cable co-ordinates are there trial holes, shall be taken at
respective positions to start excavation.
2) Required sign boards such as Men Working Danger shall be placed on the
sufficient places.
3) Trial holes should generally be at right angles to the run of cables and 150mm
deeper than the original trench depth.
4) Where the trench is over 1.5m in depth and space is limited, shoring must be used
to prevent trench walls collapse. If there is sufficient land available a simpler method
of ensuring trench safety is to batter or bench to prevent trench wall collapse.
5) Provision for sand sieving shall be provided. This is in order refill the trench with
softsand.
6) The trench shall be smooth and contoured to have smooth pulling of the cables
and fixing of cable rollers.
7) Be excavated so that all walls, roads, sewers, drains, pipes, cables, structures,
places, shall be secure against risk of subsidence or damage, and shall be carried out
to meet the requirements of the authorities concerned.
8) Be cleared of water by pumping to prevent the risk of the trench collapsing and
hazard to the general public, especially trespassing children. In locations where
flooding can occur, measures shall be taken to divert rainwater away from the trench
(e.g. use of sandbags).
9) If ground conditions in open terrain could lead to collapse of the trench wall, the
trench can be excavated with sloping sides. With machine excavation, a standard 'V'
shaped ditching bucket may be used.
10) When handling drums, suitable precautions should be taken to avoid damage to
the cable and injury to people. Due regard should be paid to the mass of the drum,
the method and direction of rolling and the method of lifting.
11) Specific control measures shall be implemented before using excavators or other
earthmoving machinery near overhead electric lines.
12) Consult with the MEW regarding approach distances and appropriate control
measures implemented to prevent any part of the plant or any load carried on it from
coming too close or contacting overhead electric lines.
13) To eliminate thermal problem on relatively short duct runs (less than 70m), the
air space in the duct should be replaced with a mixture of bentonite, cement, sand
and water. The mixture should be pumped into the duct using standard pressure
grouting techniques.
