Geometry Syllabus

The geometry syllabus outlines the course goals, units of study, assessment criteria, grading policies, classroom expectations, and contact information for the teacher, Shaimaa Zayan. Students will learn about geometric concepts like points, lines, triangles, proofs, and area/volume formulas. The course will be assessed based on the student's knowledge, investigation of patterns, communication skills, and application of geometry to real-life contexts.

Geometry

Syllabus 2017-2018

Teacher: Shaimaa Zayan Conference Period: Period 1
Email: [email protected] Tutorial Times: Monday and Friday
8:00am-8:20am

Course Description:
The geometry course is an extension of previous math knowledge. Students will learn about topics
such as points, lines, triangles congruency and similarity, proofs, transformation, quadrilaterals,
trigonometry, and area and volume formulas for 2-D and 3-D figures.

These are the MYP assessment criteria for the course.

1. Knowing and understanding: Students should be able to select appropriate mathematics, apply it
successfully, and solve the problem correctly. Problems will vary in familiarity and contexts. This
criterion will be assessed mainly through tests and quizzes.
2. Investigating pattern: Students should be able to select and apply mathematical problem-solving
techniques to discover complex patterns. They should also be able to describe patterns as general
relationships and verify and justify them. This criterion will be assesses mainly through classwork and
teacher observations.

3. Communicating: Students should be able to use appropriate mathematical language in both oral
and written explanations, use different forms of representations and move between them,
communicate mathematical reasoning and organize their work using logical structure. This criterion
will be assessed through all kinds of assignments (homework, presentation, classroom presentations,
classwork, projects, and tests).

4. Applying mathematics in real-life context: Students should be able to identify the elements of
authentic real-life situations, select appropriate mathematical strategies, and apply them successfully
to reach a solution. After having the solution, students should be able to explain the degree of accuracy
of the solution and whether it makes sense in the specific context of the situation. This criterion will be
assessed mainly through summative projects and solving real-life problems in groups during class.

Methods of Assessment
A wide variety of assessments are used to gauge students conceptual understanding. These
assessments can be formative or summative tasks.

Summative Assessment deadlines will be communicated a minimum of one week in advance to
allow students to understand the assessment criteria.
Summative assessments will typically be graded on an MYP rubric.

Tutorials:
I am available in my class on Monday and Friday from 8:00 to 8:25. This time slots can be expanded to
other days based on students need.

Grading:
30% Homework/Classwork
20% Quizzes
Together, they are called formative tasks and there will be an average of one formative grade
per week in this class.

50% - Summative tasks includes tests and major projects. There will be 2-3 summative grades
entered per quarter, and the first summative grade will be complete before the quarterly
progress report.
Retests on summative tests are available. If a student earns below a 70% , the student must
inform the teacher within 48 hours that he/she wants to retest. Students will be required to
complete test corrections in tutorials or Saturday Opportunity School prior to the retest. Per
Meridian Secondary School policy, the maximum grade awarded for a retest is a 70%.

Extra points (bonus) on test grades are available to students who complete the test review.
Amount of extra credit depends on the grade earned. 5 points are awarded for an A on the
test review, 4 points for a B, 3 points for a C, and so on.

In TexEIS Gradebook:
If a student does not turn in an assignment, an M will be placed in the gradebook. This allows
the student and parent to understand that work is missing and can still be turned in a for a
grade (please, check the late work section below).
If a student is excused from an assignment, and E will be placed in the gradebook.
If the students work is incomplete or needs attention/cannot be assessed, an I will be placed in
the gradebook.
The online TexEIS gradebook will be updated weekly.

Homework:
Students are expected to spend about 10 minutes on geometry homework per night. However,
the homework will be checked each other day and self-graded in the class.

Late Work:
For graded work turned in late, 10 points will be deducted from the assignment per school day;
however, after the fourth day, students cannot earn a grade higher than 50% with a possibility of
required Saturday Opportunity School (SOS) attendance for chronic late work. Teachers have the
option to not accept late work that is graded based on completion.

Academic Honesty:
Meridian Schools Academic Honesty Policy is based on the idea that true learning is built on honesty
and integrity. Students who commit themselves to upholding this policy will learn principles that will
last beyond their middle and high school years. If a teacher suspects that a student has not been
principled in the completion of academic work, the students exam, test, quiz, or assignment will be
collected by the teacher and given to the assistant principal for investigation. If it is determined that
the student committed academic dishonesty, he/she may redo the assignment for a grade of up to 70%
and the student may be required to serve a 3-hour Saturday detention.

Materials and Resources
For each Math class, you are responsible to have the following:
A notebook to take notes and to show and self-grade your homework.
Pencils and pens (different colors).
Ruler, protractor, and compass, a laptop, and a graphic calculator.
Expectations and Success

Come to class ready and on time!

Check the material table and take one copy of each material unless something else is indicated.
Start the warm-up immediately and quietly while I take the roll.
Raise your hand if you need help.
Submit the homework/classwork in the designated tray at the beginning or the end of the class.
Be ready to contribute to the class discussion and never whisper an answer to a friend.
I will count down five to zero to get your attention if needed.
No food or drinks but water are allowed in the classroom.
Technology is to be used for instructional purposes only.

Unit Calendar:
Unit calendars covering class activities, exams, projects, and other assignments for each unit will be
