An ecosystem includes all the living and non-living things in
a specific area and the interaction that occurs between
them. Ecosystems have no definitive size. They can be as
small as the space under a rock or as large as an ocean. A
large ecosystem contains smaller ecosystems within it.
ELEMENTS OF ECOSYSTEMS (elementos de los
ecosistemas):
An ecosystem includes all the living and non-living things in a specific area and
the interaction that occurs between them (un ecosistema incluye a todos los
seres vivos y objetos inertes en un rea especfica y la interaccin que se
produce entre ellos).
All plant life is called the flora (el conjunto de todas las plantas se llama
flora).
All the animal life is the fauna (el conjunto de todos los animales es la
fauna).
Organisms of the same species and that live in the same area are called
a population (A los organismos de la misma especie y que viven en la misma
zona se les llama poblacin).
When populations interact with each other they form a community
(Cuando las poblaciones interactan entre s forman una comunidad).
FOOD CHAINS (cadenas alimenticias):
A food web shows food chains that are interconnected (una red alimenticia
muestra cadenas alimenticias que estn interconectadas).
1. Producers (productores): They use the energy from the Sun to make food
(usan la energa del Sol para hacer la comida). Plants are producers.
2. Consumers (consumidores): They obtain energy by eating other living things
(obtienen energa comiendo a otros seres vivos).
3. Decomposers (descomponedores): They eat dead plants and animals (se
alimentan de plantas y animales muertos). Bacteria and fungi are decomposers.
The plant is eaten by the mouse (la planta es comida por el ratn). The mouse
is a primary consumer (consumidor primario). The mouse is eaten by the fox.
The fox is a secondary consumer (el zorro es un consumidor secundario). The
mouse is a prey (presa) and the fox is a predator (depredador).
DIFFERENT TYPES OF ECOSYSTEMS (diferentes tipos
de ecosistemas):
DESERTS (desiertos) FORESTS (bosques) MARINE ECOSYSTEM GRASSLANDS
(ecosistema marino) (praderas)
