III. PROCEDURE:

Rational algebraic expressions will be discuss. Different activities will also be

conducted.

A. DRILL
TEACHERS ACTIVITY STUDENTS ACTIVITY
Class, I have here a
matching type activity. You
are going to match the
algebraic expression in
column A to the
corresponding in column B.

A B
(3)(8)-(14+10) 5 A B
(2+6)(2-3) 100 (3)(8)-(14+10) 5
(2)(3)-4-5 -8 (2+6)(2-3) 100
(2+6)(2)-(-4) 3 (2)(3)-4-5 -8
(2)(3)/(3-1) 20 (2+6)(2)-(-4) 3
[4+2+(24/6)]2 0 (2)(3)/(3-1) 20
[4+2+(24/6)]2 0
B. REVIEW
TEACHERS ACTIVITY STUDENTS ACTIVITY
How do we solve multi- Maam , we solve multi-
operational mathematical operation mathematical
expression? expression by following the
rules of PEMDAS.

Can someone tell, what Maam, PEMDAS means

does PEMDAS stand for? Parenthesis, Exponent,
Multiplication, Division,
Addition, Subtraction.

That is correct! We solve

multi-operational
expression by following the
operational order of
Parenthesis, Exponent,
Division, Addition, and
Subtraction.

C. MOTIVATION
TEACHERS ACTIVITY STUDENTS ACTIVITY
Class, when do we usually (The students raise their hands.)
hear the word substitution?

And how do we substitute in (Students will share what they know

basketball? about substitution.)

D. PRESENTATION
Discussion about algebraic expression and the operation of algebraic
expression. Then activities will be conducted to measure the knowledge nd
understanding of the student regarding the lesson.

E. DISCUSSION
TEACHERS ACTIVITY STUDENTS ACTIVITY
One of the important (The student listen to the teacher.)
algebraic procedures you
will be called upon to do is
evaluate expressions. That
means reducing the
expression to a numeric
value or its simplified form.

It will help us to process of

replacing the variables in an
expression with the numeral
values and simplifying it is
known as evaluating
algebraic expression.

Example of evaluate an
algebraic expression, 4.5 +
x for x= 3.2, we need to
replace x with 3.2 and then
add.

4.5 + x = 4.5 + 3.2

=7.7

Okay class, solve example

on evaluate an algebraic
expression.
(The students will raise their hands.)
Evaluate the algebraic
expression p + 3q + 2p - 3q,
for p= 2 and q= -5.

Choices:

A. 12
B. 18
C. 3
D. 6

Correct answer: D

Solution: (The students observe carefully.)

Step 1: p + 3q + 2p - 3q
[Original expression.]

Step 2: =(p + 2p) + (3q

3q) [Group the like terms
together.]

Step 3: =3p [Solve within

the grouping symbols.]

Step 4: =3 x 2 [Substitute 2
for p.]

Step 5: =6 [Multiply.]
F. ACTIVITIES
TEACHERS ACTIVITY STUDENTS ACTIVITY
Now class, we will be
having an activity called
Sub me in.

Let:

A= 1 J= 10 S= 19
B= 2 K= 11 T= 20
C= 3 L= 12 Q= 21
D= 4 M= 13 R= 22
E= 5 N= 14 S= 23
F= 6 O= 15 T= 24
G= 7 P= 16 U=25
H= 8 Q= 17 V=26
I= 9 R= 18

Find the equivalent value of

the given words by
substituting the numerical
value above to each letter
of the word and adding all
the numerical digits.

For example:
H U M B L E
8 + 21+13 + 2 + 12 + 5 = 61

Do you get it class? Yes, maam.

Are you ready class? Yes, maam. We are ready.

Who would like to try the (A student will be called to answer.)

first word?

Now for the second word:

HARDWORK H A R D W O R K
8 + 1 + 18 + 4 + 23 + 15 + 18 + 11= 98
How about this last word

ATTITUDE
A T T I T U D E
Very good class. Does 1 + 20 + 20 + 1 + 20 + 21 + 14 + 5= 100
everyone have the same
answer? Yes, sir!
G. GENERALIZATION
TEACHERS ACTIVITY STUDENTS ACTIVITY
Class, what did we do in We find the equivalent value of
our activity? the given words by substituting
the numerical value above to
each letter of the word and
adding all the numerical digits

We evaluate an algebraic
expression.

We solve multi-operation
mathematical expression by
following the rules of PEMDAS.

Correct. How did we find Maam, we substitute the

the value of the given corresponding value in each
words? letter and we perform the
indicated operation, we add all
the value.

Lets do this example:

Evaluate 6x2 + 3 when;

a) x= 0
b) x= -2
c) x=

For letter a, how do we Maam, we substitute the given

evaluate? value of x in the equation.

Correct. Can someone (A student will be called to substitute the

show us how to substitute value of x.)
the value of x in letter a in
our equation? Maam, the answer is 6(0)2 + 3

Very good!

Now, what is the next Maam, we perform the indicated

step? operations.

Since we got here a multi- Maam, we follow the rules of

operation equation, what PEMDAS.
should we do?
Excellent! Can someone (A student will be called to answer.)
demonstrate on how to
apply the rules of 6x2 + 3
PEMDAS in our equation? 6(0)2 + 3
6(0) + 3
0+3
=3

That is correct!

Now for letter b. x= -2, (A student will be called to answer.)

who would like to try
following the same steps? 6x2 + 3
6(-2)2 + 3
6(4) + 3
24 + 3
= 27

Ans for the last example, (A student will be called to answer.)

x= .
6x2 + 3
6(1/4) + 3
6/4 + 3

Following the rules in adding

dissimilar fractions.

6/4 + 12/4
= 18/4 or 9/2

Very good!

H. APPLICATION
TEACHERS ACTIVITY STUDENTS ACTIVITY
Now that you already know
how to evaluate algebraic
expressions, we will be
having a group activity. I will
divide you into two groups,
Each group will choose their
leader. The leader will be the
one who can ask me about
the activity and he is also
responsible for dividing the
tasks between the members
of the group.
Each group will be given an
activity envelope where you
will find the materials for the
activity and the expressions
that your group will be going
to evaluate.

Group 1

Find the value of each

expression, when x= 5. Group 1 will give their answer.

1. 3x2 + 2x 3 1. 3x2 + 2x - 3
3(5)2 + 2(5) 3
2. (x 3)2 3(25) + 10 3
75 + 10 3
3. 2x 11 75 + 7
