Q.1 Explain the difference between prescriptive and descriptive approach to grammar
in detail. Which approach do you think is more suitable to teach grammar of
English language to ESL learners? (20)
Q.2 What is the Hierarchical Structure of a sentence in English Language? Explain all
types of clauses in English language with examples. (20)

Q.3 Word-Family is a term commonly used in teaching/learning semantics. Explain it in


your own words by describing its ambit/range in the field of word-meaning. (20)

Q.4 Explain the difference between transitive, intransitive and linking verbs. Give five
examples of each case. (10)

Q.5 What do you understand by the term chain and choice? Comment on different
patterns of English syntactic structure with the help of examples. (20)

Q.6 How would you use audio visual aids for teaching Simple future Tense? (10)

ASSIGNMENT No. 2
Project Marks: 100

This assignment is based on a research-oriented activity. You are required to carry out a
research in one of the areas given below. Submit the research project to the tutor within
the scheduled period. Present the same in the course/assignment presentation workshop
(the schedule of the course/assignment presentation workshop will be intimated by the
tutor concerned or the Regional Office). This assignment carries 40 marks for the written
report/assignment and 60 for the oral presentation.

A few guidelines for the presentation and the written report:

1) The written report should have an introduction, body and conclusion. It should be
written in clear concise and correct English.
2) It should be 58 double spaced typed/handwritten pages.
3) The presentation will be assessed and evaluated mainly in.
i. Contents of the assignment/report
ii. Communication skills
iii. Language accuracy
iv. Language fluency
v. Presentation style
Note: (Please read the booklet How to write formal Report & give Presentations)
4) You may use transparencies charts or any other material for good presentation with
the permission of the tutor (if possible).

The following headings should be incorporated in the research project:

Introduction to the study


Background situation (in relation with your topic)
Statement of the problem/rationale
Objectives of the study
Research question or hypothesis
Delimitation of the study
Literature review (conduct a mini-literature review, related to opted topic, of 4-5
typed pages according to MLA or APA style)
Research design (explain kind of research selected for project)
Data collection (explain the tools used in the collection of the data)
Data analysis strategies (explain the strategies used in the analysis of the data)
Conclusion (base it on the findings of your research)
Recommendations
Bibliography (according to MLA or APA style, for help read research book and
thesis hand book, as used in the literature review for internal citation.

Select any one of the following topics in consultation with your tutor for your research
project.

i. Study the process of language (L2) learning among students of Intermediate level
and try to analyze which errors they make more in their writing, whether of chain
or of choice. For this purpose, select a group of students, give them a writing task.
Analyze it and present your findings in the written report. Also suggest remedial
measures that you can take as a teacher to eradicate those errors.

ii. Design a lesson plan based on the teaching of simple past tense. You must pay
attention to the formulation of clear and precise learning outcomes. Begin your
lesson with the general discussion to measure depth of the students, understanding

of this particular tense. Give your input with examples to practice this tense; you
can incorporate audio visual aids like pictures at this stage, if you feel necessary. At
the production stage, you assign them a homework task to measure their general
comprehension of the tense. In your report of the lesson plan clearly mention how
far comprehension of the tense. In your report of the lesson plan clearly mention
how far you had been able to achieve your learning objectives and also discuss that
how their understanding improved as a direct result of the practice which they did
in the class.
