Faradays Law and Lenzs Law

Faradays Law The magnitude of the emf induced in a circuit is directly
proportional to the rate of change of magnetic flux
linkage through the circuit.

= N

E = -N d
dt

Lenzs Law The induced current flows in such a direction that it
opposes the change that produces it.

Motional emf , E = BLv sin

Equation for induced emf, E = -BAN sin t

Self inductance, L

Definition produces an induced emf in the circuit due to a change

of current flowing through the same circuit.

Back emf, Eb = -L dI unit = H (henry)

dt

LI = N N, L = constant

Self inductance, L = 0 N2 A l = length of solenoid

l N = number of turns

Energy stored in an inductor

UL = 1 LI2 UL = magnetic energy stored in inductor

2

Mutual induction and mutual inductance

E = - M dI M = mutual inductance
dt

Definition of mutual inductance A property of the circuit component

which can induce an emf in the
neighbouring magnetically coupled
component
Unit = henry (H)

MI1 = N2 2 M and N2 = constant

Transformer

A transformer has the following components:

Primary coil

Secondary coil

Laminated soft iron core

E p = Np (Assumption: Rp of primary coil is

Es Ns negligible)
IpEp = IsEs

Back emf in dc motor

I = V-Eb Ra = resistance of the armature

Ra Eb = back emf in the coil
V = voltage across the armature
I = current
