INTEGER CHEAT SHEET

Integers - A set of positive and negative whole num bers. They can be represented
on a num ber line.
THE NUMBER LINE
NEGATIVE NUMBERS POSITIVE NUMBERS

Absolute Value- The distance a number is from zero on the number line. An absolute value is
never negative. Examples: l -5 l = 5 and l5l =5

ADDING INTEGERS SUBTRACTING INTEGERS

Add the absolute value of the numbers and Ad d th e O ppo site
keep the same sign.
KEE P- Keep the sign of the first number
(positive) + (positive) = Positive
CHAN GE- Change the subtraction sign to
(+4) + (+5) = +9 addition

(negative) + (negative) = Negative CHAN GE- Change the sign of the second
number to the opposite sign. If it is
(-4) + (-5) = -9 positive- change to negative. If it is
negative- change to positive.
DI FF ER ENT SI GNS - Subtract and Keep (+4) (-4)
the Sign of the Bigger Number!
Keep change change
Subtract the absolute value of the numbers (+4) + (+4)
and keep the sign of the bigger number.
NOW U S E T HE RU LES FO R ADDI NG:
(-4) + (+5) = +1 SAME SIGN- Add absolute values and keep
(+4) + (-5) = -1 sign:
(+4) + (+4) = 8

MULTPLYI NG INTEGERS DIVIDING INTEGERS

Multiply the numbers. Answer will be positive. Divide the numbers. Answer will be positive.

(-5) (-5) = +25 (-5) (-5) = +1

Multiply the numbers. Answer will be negative Divide the numbers. Answer will be negative

(+5) (-5) = -25 (+5) (-5) = -1
