COURSE OVERVIEW

Course Description

Business Administration 240 is a two-unit core course in the MBA program. It covers the
strategic, operational, and tactical decisions in manufacturing and service operations.
Specific topics include operations strategy; product & process design; facilities management;
designing work systems; quality management; supply chain management; resource planning
systems; and lean manufacturing. It also exposes the student to trends and developments in
this field.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of the course, you are expected to:

Understand the importance of managing the processes involved in converting and


allocating the resources of a business;
Relate the operations management function with the other functional areas of the
business; and
Analyze operations-related problems, choose among alternative solutions, and make
appropriate decisions.

Course Methodology

This course involves group reporting, case analyses, lectures and discussions on various
topics in operations management. The students will be assigned readings from the text and
other operations management journals. It will also employ the case method in analyzing
operations management-related problems.

Prerequisite: BA 211

SPECIFIC POLICIES PER REQUIREMENT

1. EXAMINATIONS (20%)

There will be at least one exam in this course with each exam accounting for 10%.

2. GROUP REPORTING (20%)

You will be divided into six (6) groups and the groups will be assigned specific activities
to better appreciate and understand the applications of the BA 240 topics.

3. WRITTEN CASE ANALYSES (20%)

a. There will be six (6) case groups for this course. The presenting group is required to
submit a formal written report (short bond paper, single-spaced, Arial 11, maximum of
10 pages {excluding exhibits and annexes}), following the case analysis format
shown in Exhibit 1. All case analysis reports must be submitted on the day the case
will be presented. Late cases will not be graded.

b. The non-presenting group is required to submit a two-page case analysis focusing on


the problem analysis and recommended courses of action.

4. OPERATIONS AUDIT (40%)

Your group is required to conduct an operations audit or an in-depth analysis of the


companys operations (manufacturing or service) focusing on a specific operations
management topic (e.g., quality management, facilities management, inventory
management, etc.). Refer to Exhibit 3 for the report outline.

The schedule for the research breaks and progress report is shown in the Summary
Schedule.
