The committee is evaluating the district's current report card and grading system with the goal of developing a comprehensive, standards-based system. They have identified key phases and are focusing first on identifying power standards in reading and math. The committee is discussing how to clearly communicate student progress and determine consistent definitions for performance levels like "proficient." They are also reviewing headings and standards on current report cards.

SB Grading/Report Card Committee

Purpose of the committee: To evaluate our current report card and re-design our grading
system.

To identify the stages of this process.

To develop a comprehensive system that reports specific academic progress to students and
families.

Members:
Ben Anderson, Kevin VanderLinden, Jodi Brogan, Joannie Sanger, Kristin Maffin,
Jamie Campbell, Miranda Patten, Nicole Rempe, Angela VanWoerkom, Christina Cornia, Kelsi
Christensen, Hannah Hafele, (Andy Wirtz added after)

November 17th meeting notes:

*Power Standards drive your rubrics.
*Sticking with 3,2,1.
*Developing an informational letter that explains to parents what a 3, 2, 1 means. Send this out
each time report cards go home.

Phase 1:
Looking over the report card and developing power standards.
With the use of our book study, it will help to understand what standards based reporting
is.
Power Standards for Reading and Math.

Phase 2:
Developing rubrics for reading and math guided by our power standards.

Next two meetings:

Tuesday, November 29 at 3:45 in the Morris Media
-Read chapters 2 and 3

Tuesday, December 13 at 3:45 in the Morris Media

November 29 meeting notes:

Questions to think about/drive discussion for chapters 2 and 3:

-What is the purpose of our report card? Should that purpose be stated on the report card?
If we decide to go with trimester standards - teachers need to have a consistent view of
what this looks like - no grey areas
We may want to relay to parents that the student is on track, but where they will be going
as well
Discussed broadening the power standards - more of a global standard that is not
necessarily assessed each trimester
Communicate was preferred over describe
Progress, expectations, grade level, learning successes, additional time and effort is
needed
Draft of Purpose Statement:
The purpose of this report card is to communicate students learning progress to
their parents and/or guardians, based on grade level standards. The intention is
to share students learning successes and show areas where additional time and
effort is needed.
**This report card communicates a student's current level of performance at this
time in the school year.

Scores should reflect a range to fit into the 3, 2, 1

Communication during conferences to parents to show where they need to get by the end
of the school year

-Who is the primary audience of our report card?

Our audience of the report card will be for our students parents.
-What other ways do we (as a district) communicate student learning to parents?
Newsletters, parent-teacher conferences, Literacy Night, individual parent contact, progress
reports, SST notes, feedback on work sent home, monthly newsletters by building
(What tools are part of our comprehensive reporting system?)
-How should the information be used? (pg. 33)
-What additional research do we need to further our understanding?

**Our purpose must be clear

TO DO:
Read chapter 4
Optional research articles and books from AEA from Jodi to read

December 13th meeting notes 3:45 in the Morris Media:

-Review Purpose statement for report card...thoughts?
-We need to discuss highlighted questions from last meeting.
-Determine next meeting date after Winter Break

Questions to think about/drive discussion for chapter 4:

1. How many reporting standards will be included for each subject area? (This will involve the
process of looking at what we currently have and then making changes from there.)
2. What are your thoughts on product, process, and progress standards?

*For next meeting...have chapter 5 read. We will briefly discuss, then begin the process of
looking at the current standards on the report card for LA and Math.

Agreed that there needs to be a process score for each subject. Looked at the wording on the
bottom of page 53.tweaked it slightly.
-Consistently, Usually, Occasionally, Rarely

What do we call this on the report card? I am not sure if parents will understand if we label it
process score...

Next meeting:
-Team members are going to try to recruit another grade level member
-Read chapter 5
-Day/Time of next meeting... to be determined (will be after break)

January 11 - Reading Focused Team -meeting notes

-Review previous meetings for new member/discuss purpose

-Discuss chapter 5
-Look at our current headings for ELA on grade level report cards

*table talking about progress report discussions until whole group meeting

January 17 - Math Focused Team -meeting notes

-Review previous meetings for new member/discuss purpose

Reviewed what we have discussed so far and what information the chapters have
provided us.
-Discuss chapter 5
Some examples used domains
Some examples used standards and were very large
-Look at our current headings for Math on grade level report cards
5

Couldnt we have a link on the Bondurant website to the standards specific for each grade
level?

Math
Kdg Heading- Counting and Cardinality

K-5 - Heading - Operations and Algebraic Thinking

K-5 - Heading - Number and Operations in Base Ten

3-5 - Heading - Number and Operations - Fractions

K-5 - Measurement, Data, and Geometry

Look at having 4-5 standards listed below these headings? Change the wording on some to make
them more friendly

Next Meetings for Math - diving into the Power Standards - begin with kindergarten and
common core to determine and clarify which are mastery standards and which are introductory.
