Problem Set 1

This document contains a 4-question problem set from a Mechanics of Fluids class at the University of the Philippines Diliman. The problem set provides general instructions and asks students to calculate things like: the amount of air remaining in a partially filled gasoline tank based on the fuel gage reading; the minimum volume of concrete needed to keep a gate closed; the depth a cylindrical buoy must submerge to hold a hemispherical gate closed; and the angular speed that a partially water-filled cylindrical tank was rotating at based on the water level after being put to rest. The instructor's email is provided for any questions about the problem set.

Problem Set 1
First Semester, A.Y. 2017-2018
General Instruction: This problem set is not a course requirement but answering all questions to
the best of your knowledge is highly encouraged to prepare you for the long exam. If you have any
question regarding any item in this problem set, email me at [email protected].

Problem 1

The reading of an automobile fuel gage is proportional to the gage

pressure at the bottom of the tank. If the tank is 20 cm wide, 32 cm
deep and is contaminated with 3 cm of water, how many
centimeters of air remains at the top when the gage indicates full?
Calculate also the magnitude of the resultant hydrostatic force on
the right side of the tank. Use gasoline = 6670 N/m3.

Answer: h = 1.412 cm; F = 46.437 N

Problem 2

Determine the minimum volume of concrete (SGconcrete = 2.40) needed

to keep the 1-meter wide gate in a closed position in the condition
where l = 2 meters.

Answer: 0.381 m3

Problem 3

The hemispherical gate is held in position by a cylindrical buoy.

Determine the minimum required depth of submergence of the
buoy to keep the gate closed. The fluid is water. Neglect the
weights of the gate and the buoy. NOTE: There is no fluid below the
gate.

Answer: 0.583 m

Problem 4

An open cylindrical tank 1.2 meters in diameter and 2.1 meters high is 2/3 full of water. After rotating with a
constant angular speed, , about its vertical axis, the water depth at the tank became 0.9 meters when put
back to rest. What is the value of ?

Answer: 11.56 rad/s
