Algebra 1 with Mr. Ladage will cover representing and solving real-world problems with algebraic equations and graphs. Students will learn order of operations, solving equations, and unit analysis. Grades will be based on quizzes, tests, assignments, and a final exam. Mr. Ladage aims to teach algebra in a Christ-centered environment and help students develop their thinking skills.

Algebra 1 With Mr.

Ladage - Room 219

Lutheran High School South educates for excellence in a
Christ-centered environment, preparing youth for leadership
in service to the church, the home, and the world.

About the course

Algebra is a branch of mathematics that allows you to solve real world problems with equations that use variables to
represent numbers. You will learn to represent problems with mathematical equations and use well defined rules to
solve those equations and determine solutions to the problem. We will look at how information can be represented in
graphs, tables, and equations, and how these are related to one another. The skills you develop in this class,
particularly those dealing with representing word problems, order of operations, solving equations, and unit analysis
will be used in every other math and science class you take at LHSS.

About Me
I enjoy Algebra; I enjoy learning about it and helping students learn about it. You can expect me to:
 Set an example of Christian living – actions and words, confession and forgiveness.
 Have bad days – but do my best to overcome and give you quality instruction anyway.
 Challenge you constantly to use and improve your thinking skills.
 Give each student the opportunity to participate in class
 Grade fairly, and as promptly as possible
 Use communication tools – Powerschool, progress reports, email/phone, notes on your assessments
 Be available when appropriate

Supplies
1. Notebook and pocket folder (papers will not be stored in your book)
2. Pencil: mechanical preferred (all quizzes and tests must be in pencil)
3. Other note taking/marking utensils (pens of differing color, highlighters, colored pencils)
4. A non-graphing, scientific calculator
a. TI-30A or TI-30XII is recommended. You can get one for about $10 at any local discount store. You
will NOT need a graphing calculator
5. Ruler

How will your grade be determined?

Your semester grade will be broken down, approximately, as follows:
Quizzes/Tests – 55% Assignments, labs, etc – 10% Proficiency tests – 15% Final – 20%
Your points in each category will be converted to a percentage and weighted accordingly.

The final grade will be based on the school scale.

A > 93 93 > A- > 90

90 > B+ > 87 87 > B > 83 83 > B- > 80
80 > C+ > 77 77 > C > 73 73 > C- > 70
70 > D+ > 67 67 > D > 63 63 > D- > 60

Assignments:
Assignments will be given daily. Depending on the assignment, I may i) do a simple check to see if it is
completed, ii) collect and score it, or iii) do neither.
If it is checked, or scored, it will have a maximum value of 10 points. The lower the quality of your work,
the lower the points received. 0 points will be received for un-attempted work. There will be no “grace period”
for late work. The sequential nature of mathematics requires immediacy in the completion of your assignments.
When I only “check” assignments, correctness is discovered by our discussion in class, or by searching the answers in
the back of the book. It is up to you to ask about problems if you are uncertain of the solution.
To be considered “complete” and “thorough” I must see your work shown on the paper. (this is how you tell me what
you are thinking!) This is your evidence of an attempt to solve the problem. A page full of “answers”, with no
supporting evidence of their correctness, is unacceptable. Assignments are your way to reinforce skills and
techniques. They are essential for learning. Should you demonstrate any lack of concern for this work I will notify
your parents.
Make sure that you keep up with your assignments and make good use of in-class work. Algebra concepts build on
one another. If you fall behind, it can be very difficult to catch up and learn the new material.

Quizzes/Tests :
Each quiz in a unit covers all material in the unit up to that point.
Each test in the semester covers all material in the unit, plus some questions from other units from that quarter.
Because they are cumulative, you will have a chance to improve the previous grade.

System for improvement of assessment grades, during a specific unit

A quiz score can be raised by doing significantly better on a subsequent quiz or the unit test. The
previous (lower) score will be raised to be 2 grades below the current quiz/test score.

For example, if a student gets a D on Quiz 1, and then an B on the next quiz, Quiz 2, the score for Quiz 1
will improve to a C+. Then if Quiz 2 is followed by an A on the Unit Test, Quiz 2 now becomes a B+.

Also, keep in mind that consecutive quizzes and the unit test increase in value (they are worth more points)
thus making these increases even more valuable.

Proficiency tests : Three proficiency tests will be given each quarter which cover previously learned math skills.
During each quarter a test will be given that covers previously learned math skills. The goal is to maintain skills
learned throughout the year. When a new quarter arrives, the proficiency test will include the same material as before,
but also include skills from the previous quarter in Algebra.

Absences
It is critical in a sequential course like mathematics that you are in attendance every time we meet. If you are
absent, set a priority to take care of getting caught up in your work. It is expected that you will take assessments when
you return from a missed day of class. If for some reason this is not possible, bring a note from home.
If seminar time is available, please see me. You may have to see me before or after school. Check Powerschool
for assignments.

I want you to succeed and enjoy the satisfaction of learning and becoming proficient in Algebra. The work that you
put into this class will benefit you for many years to come. Blessings on your studies in Algebra.
