Dimensional Analysis Worksheet

The document provides instructions for using dimensional analysis to convert between measurement units. It outlines 7 steps: 1) Identify the needed conversion factor, 2) Write the given value over 1, 3) Multiply by the conversion factor, 4) Cancel out matching units, 5) Multiply numerators, 6) Multiply denominators, 7) Divide the results. It then provides two example problems, one converting 5 km to miles for a cross country race, and another converting bullet speed from feet/second to miles/hour using two conversion factors.

General Science 8 Period ____

Directions: Use the following steps to help guide you through the process of
dimensional analysis. Use dimensional analysis to convert the measurements for the two
sample problems.

1. Identify the conversion factor that is needed to convert from what is given to what
is trying to be solved for.

2. Write the value that is given over 1.

3. Multiply by the conversion factor. Write the conversion factor as a fraction,

making sure the unit that is on top in the previous fraction is on bottom in the
next fraction.

4. Slash Slash. Cancel out units. If a unit is on top in one fraction, and on bottom
in the next fraction, they are canceled out and can be removed.

5. Multiply all numbers across that are on the top of the fractions, keeping any units
that were not canceled out.

6. Multiply all numbers across that are on the bottom of the fractions, keeping any
units that were not canceled out.

7. Divide the top number by the bottom number.

8. Repeat until the unit that you are trying to solve for is the only one left.

Example 1: How many miles do high school cross country runners race in a typical 5 km
race?

Conversion Factor: _________ miles = __________ kilometers

Answer:_________________
Example 2: According to an article, the speed of a .30-06 bullet travels at approximately
2,700 feet/sec. How many miles per hour is this bullet traveling?

*This example actually takes two conversion factors to get feet per second to miles per
hour. Find the following conversion factors:

__________ feet = _________ miles

__________ seconds = _________ hour

*Still start with what you know, but set up two conversion factors. Make sure units still
cancel out so you end up with miles on top and hour on bottom.
