ABOUT THE EDITORS

Tariq Samad received a B.S. degree in Engineering and Applied Science


from Yale University and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical and Com-
puter Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University. He has been employed
by various Honeywell research and development organizations since 1986 and
is currently a Corporate Fellow associated with the corporations Automa-
tion and Control Solutions business group. Dr. Samad is Editor-in-Chief of
IEEE Control Systems Magazine and his recent publications include the edited
volumes Perspecties in Control Engineering: Technologies, Applications, New
Directions IEEE Press. and Automation, Control, and Complexity: An
Integrated View Wiley.. His research interests include intelligent control,
autonomous systems, and statistical verification of real-time systems.

Gary Balas received B.S. and M.S. degrees in civil and electrical engineering
from UC Irvine and a Ph.D. in Aeronautics and Astronautics from the
California Institute of Technology in 1990. He is a professor in the Depart-
ment of Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics at the University of Min-
nesota and is codirector of the Control Science and Dynamical Systems
Department. He is a co-organizer and developer of the MUSYN Robust
Control Short Course and the -Analysis and Synthesis Toolbox used with
MATLAB, and president of MUSYN, Inc. In 1999, he received the Out-
standing Young Investigator Award from the ASME Dynamic Systems and
Control Division and in 1993 was awarded a McKnight-Land Grant Profes-
sorship at the University of Minnesota. He is an Associate Fellow of the
AIAA and a Senior Member of the IEEE. Professor Balas research interests
include robust and distributed control, integration of control and real-time
software services, and application of advanced control to aerospace vehicles.
