Week 5 - Practice Problem (Solution)

The document contains three practice problems involving the analysis of isotropic slabs using yield line theory to determine moment parameters and maximum loads. Problem 1 involves a slab with two load zones and calculates a moment parameter of 7.932 kNm/m assuming the yield line intersection is inside the slab. Problem 2 repeats Problem 1 assuming the intersection is outside the slab. Problem 3 analyzes a square slab with a central hole and fixed edges to determine the maximum uniformly distributed load of 6.389 kN/m2 that can be supported before yield.

Week 5 Practice Problems: Yield- Line Theory

Question 1

In the isotropic slab shown in the following figure, Area I carries an ultimate load of 8kN/m2
while Area II carries an ultimate load of 15kN/m2. Determine the value of the moment
parameter m. Assume the intersection point of the positive yield lines is located inside the
slab.

Question 3

The following figure shows a 9 m x 9 m square slab with a 3 m x 3 m square hole. The slab has
a fixed support along the outside edges as shown. The slab is isotropically reinforced with a
positive moment capacity of 8kNm/m. The negative moment capacity at the fixed supports is
1.33 times the positive moment capacity. The slab is subjected to a uniformly distributed load of
q kN/m2. Using Yield Line analysis, calculate the maximum value of the uniformly distributed
load q.
