Power Supply Questions PDF

This document contains 7 questions for an electronics power course. 1) Explain the advantages and disadvantages of linear regulators vs. switch-mode power supplies and when each would be recommended. 2) How to calculate power dissipation in a linear regulator and how efficiency changes with load. 3) Recommend a topology for a 100W AC/DC supply with small output ripple and high efficiency. 4) Use an online simulator to design a buck converter from 12V to 5V output with 20A load current. 5) Recommend a topology that can boost 12V to -24V or step down to -5V depending on duty cycle. 6) Explain energy transfer in a flyback converter

Exercise No. 1 for Course no.: 23590.

(003)

Due Date: Feb. 23, 2013

1. Explain the advantages and disadvantages of a linear solution over a

switch-mode power supply solution and vice versa. For what specific
applications will you recommend one solution over the other?

2. How do you estimate the power dissipated in the series pass transistor
of a linear regulator? As the output load increases do you expect
efficiency to increase? Why is this so?

3. Your program manager approached you regarding what topology to

use for a 100W AC/DC power supply with wide range AC input
(isolation required). The system that will be powered requires the
ripple voltage of the output DC voltage to be small and efficiency to be
high. Justify your recommendation.

4. Using the on-line simulation tool, determine the switching freq. and
corresponding inductance that you need for a buck converter to step
down the input voltage from 12VDC to 5VDC with 20A of output load
current. What value of K= Iripple/lout did you use and why did you
use this? Also, how can the switching frequency help to make this
converter smaller?

5. Your program manager is asking you to recommend a topology that

can take a 12V input and be able to boost this to -24V or drop this to
-5V depending on the duty cycle. What will you recommend and
assuming CCM operation what are the corresponding duty cycles?

6. Explain how energy is transferred from primary to secondary in a

Flyback converter? Is the Flyback transformer acting as an inductor
and a transformer at the same time? If so why does it need to?

7. A boost topology can be used as power factor correction stage and it

can be operated as DCM (discontinuous conduction mode), CRM
(critical conduction mode), or CCM (continuous conduction mode).
Kindly explain the different modes of operations and for what
applications do you recommend each one of them to be used?
