IGNITION - GENERAL - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
______________________________________________
1. _______
General
(Ref. Fig. 001)
The ignition system consists of 2 independent systems : 2 high energy
ignition exciters for which the energization is controlled by the ECU, 2
spark igniters, and 2 coaxial shielded ignition leads.
The purpose of the system is :
- to produce an electrical spark to ignite the fuel air/mixture in the
engine combustion chamber during the starting cycle on ground and in
flight.
- to provide continuous ignition (manual or automatic selection) during
takeoff, landing and operation in adverse weather conditions or EIU
failed.
Each ignition system is alternately selected by the ECU for each starting
sequence in order to have no failure of an ignition channel for more than
one flight and to increase overall system life.
2. Description
___________
A. Ignition Exciters
The 2 ignition exciters are mounted on shock dampened brackets on the
outer surface of the fan case. Each exciter has an input connector and an
output connector.
B. Spark Igniters
The 2 spark igniters are mounted into bosses at the 4 and 8 oclock
positions on the outer surface of the combustion case. The inner tip
extends through ferrules in the outer liner of the combustion chamber.
C. Ignition Leads
The ignition leads are constructed of insulated wire in a sealed flexible
conduit having a copper inner braid and a nickel outer braid. The leads
connect the spark igniters to the output connectors of the ignition
exciters. The aft ends of the leads, from the tube bundle junction box to
the spark igniters, are cooled by fan discharge air passing through the
lead conduit (the ignition system cooling is described in ref. 75-27-00).
3. _________
Operation
(Ref. Fig. 002)
The ignition exciters operate with 115V(105-122V)-400Hz input. The power is
transformed, rectified and discharged in the form of capacitor discharge
pulses through the ignition leads to the spark igniters. Each engine circuit
is capable of independent operation and is selected by ENG/MASTER 1 (2)
control lever in the cockpit center pedestal.

ELECTRICAL POWER SUPPLY - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
___________________________________________________
1. ___________
Description
The ignition system requires 115V, 400Hz from the electrical system via the
ECU. The ECU controls excitation of ignition exciters A and B.
The ignition exciters transform the 115V - 400Hz current into high voltage
pulsating current. This current charges internal capacitors. The stored
energy is 5 to 8 joules. The discharge rate is of one per second and the
energy delivered is 1.5 joules.
Each engine has two independent ignition exciters
- Upper ignition exciter (IGN 1) and lower ignition exciter (IGN 2) .
- Upper ignition exciter supplies the right spark igniter (A) while lower
ignition exciter supplies the left spark igniter (B).
The two ignition exciters for each energization are controlled by ECU and
can be operated independently (starting sequence on ground) or
simultaneously (continuous ignition). The ECU selects one ignition exciter
for two successive automatic starts then selects the other ignition
exciter, this is to avoid dormant failure and premature wear of sparks
igniters.
A. Ignition Exciters
(Ref. Fig. 001)
(1) General
There are 2 ignition exciters which are mounted on the fan case with
resilient shock mounts. The ignition exciters provide starting and
continuous duty ignition on demand. Each ignition exciter is capable
of independent operation and alternate use of ignition circuits is
recommended.
(2) Description
The ignition exciter is a capacitor discharge type exciter requiring
an input of 115V (108 to 122 volts AC) at 400Hz (380 to 420Hz). The
output voltage is 15 to 20KV at the end of a 13 foot ignition lead. A
tin plated aluminium housing encloses the exciter and the components
of the exciter are secured mechanically or with silicone adhesive to
the housing. The housing is hermetically sealed to ensure proper
operation under varying environmental conditions.
(3) Operation
The ignition exciter consists of an input circuit (filter network and
power transformer), rectifier circuit and storage capacitor circuit,
and a discharge circuit. The alternating current input is rectified
and stored in the capacitors. When the capacitors reach approximately
2850 volts each they discharge a combined voltage of approximately
5700 volts.

DISTRIBUTION - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
________________________________________
1. ___________
Description
The ignition for each engine is carried out by means of one or both ignition
exciters which transform(s) the 115 V - 400 Hz power supply into high
voltage pulsating current.
The high voltage through the ignition lead (shielded and ventilated)
delivers to the spark igniter the power required to initiate the fuel/ air
mixture combustion by a series of sparks.
A. Ignition Leads
(Ref. Fig. 001, 002)
An ignition lead transmits electrical energy from an ignition exciter to
a spark igniter. Each lead consists of a 0.28 in. (7 mm) diameter
silicone insulated cable containing a No. 14 AWG nickel plated copper
stranded conductor. The 0.28 in. (7 mm) cable is housed within a flexible
conduit which features a nickel plated copper inner braid, a nickel-iron
convoluted conduit, and a nickel outer braid.
Fan discharge air is introduced into an enlarged diameter portion of each
ignition lead conduit for cooling of the silicone insulated cable and
igniter connection.
B. Spark Igniter
(Ref. Fig. 001, 002)
(1) General
There are 2 spark igniters in combustion case bosses at the 4 and 8
oclock position, aft looking forward, on the combustion case
assembly. The tip of the spark igniters extends through ferrules in
the outer liner into the combustion chamber. Each spark igniter is
connected by an ignition lead to an ignition exciter.
When charged by a high voltage from the ignition exciter, the spark
igniter provides an arc to ignite the fuel being injected into the
combustion chamber by the fuel nozzle assemblies.
(2) Operation
When the ignition exciter discharges the high voltage pulses through
the ignition lead to the spark igniter, electric arc pulses occur
between the center electrode and the outer electrode, and an ionized
discharge occurs. The hot ion discharge ignites the fuel injected by
the fuel nozzles. The electrical pulse discharges continue until
electrical supply to the ignition exciter is discontinued.

The loss of cooling

IGNITION STARTING AND CONTINUOUS RELIGHT - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
____________________________________________________________________
1. ___________
Description
The ignition circuit is supplied with 115VAC - 400Hz.
The ignition of the spark igniters is controlled via the ECU and EIU.
The two ignition systems are independent.
- the ECU selects one or two spark igniters depending on the Flight/Ground
status and the engine mode (automatic start, manual start or continuous
ignition):
Both spark igniters are always selected except during automatic start on
ground during which only one spark igniter is selected (the same spark
igniter is selected for two successive starts).
2. _________
Operation
(Ref. Fig. 001)
A. Automatic Start
The ENG panel (115VU) initial configuration is :
- ENG/MODE/CRANK/NORM/IGN/START selector switch in NORM position
- both ENG/MASTER control switches in OFF position.
The engine is not running.

(c) Place the selector switch in NORM position. The engine page
disappears.
(a) You place the MASTER control switch back to OFF. This causes :
- the direct closure of the HP fuel SOV
- the starter shutoff valve closure via the ECU
- the ignition exciters deenergization.
When auto start is initiated (MASTER control switch to ON), even
if you place back the selector switch in NORM or CRANK position
the start sequence is not interrupted.
(b) The ECU aborts the starting sequence in case of detected incident
:
- starter shutoff valve failure
- HP fuel SOV failure
- hot start
- stall
- overspeed.
- Engine fails to lightoff after continuous ignition is selected.
