1. (10 marks) Expand the given function, f (x), in a Fourier series

f (x) = x|x|, 1 < x < 1 (1)

2. (10 marks) Use the power series method to solve the initial value problem

(x + 1)y (2 x)y + y = 0 (2)

with y(0) = 2 and y (0) = 1.

3. (10 marks) x = 0 is a regular singular point of the differential equation

9x2 y + 9x2 y + 2y = 0. (3)

of Frobenius to obtain two linearly independent series solutions about x = 0.
4. (5 marks) If the temperature on a rectangular plate is given by T (x, y) = 100 2x2 y 2 , find
the path a heat-seeking insect would take starting at the point (3, 4) as it moves in the direction
in which the temperature increases most rapidly. Use the fact that if ~r(t) =< x(t), y(t) >
then T =< x (t), y (t) >.
5. (5 marks) Find the curvature of an elliptical helix that is described by the curve

~r(t) = a cos(t)i + b sin(t)j + ck (4)

where a > 0, b > 0 and c > 0 are constants.
